Pedro MartinezThe Marlins hosted the Mets at Dolphin Stadium for a 7:10 PM start.  The Mets trailed 4-0 early as Pedro got rocked and injured, but the Mets fought back to tie the game.  The Bullpens held it down until Wise gave up a walkoff home run to Andino in the 10th.  The Mets can still win the series with a win tomorrow.

Mets Lineup: Reyes, Castillo, Wright, Beltran, Delgado, Church, Pagan, Schneider, Martinez.

Marlins Lineup: Ramirez, Uggla, Jacobs, Willingham, Cantu, Gonzalez, Treanor, Amezaga, VandenHurk.

VandenHurk was the starting pitcher for the Marlins.  VandenHurk got threw the Top of the 1st only giving up a hit where Castillo beat out a ground ball to short.  In the Top of the 2nd, VandenHurk walked Pagan with 2 outs.  Then Schneider singled through the hole on the right side to advance Pagan to third, but VandenHurk struck out Martinez during a 12 pitch at-bat to retire the side.  In the Top of the 3rd, Reyes lined a leadoff single to center.  Castillo dropped down a sacrifice bunt to advance Reyes to second, but VandenHurk got through another scoreless inning.  In the Top of the 4th, Delgado drove the ball up the middle for a leadoff single.  Church pulled a single through the hole on the right side to advance Delgado to second.  Pagan also pulled an RBI single through the hole to score Delgado and advanced Church to second.

Gonazalez made a pitching change so Pinto replaced VandenHurk.  Schneider lined an RBI single up the middle to score Church and Pagan advanced to second.  Martinez dropped down a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners.  Reyes sacrificed flied to left scoring Pagan while Schneider remained on second.  The Mets got 3 runs back in the 4th.  In the Top of the 5th, Wright lined a leadoff single into left field.  Pinto walked Beltran on 5 pitches before striking out Delgado.  Pinto walked Church to load the bases.  Pagan sacrifice flied to center to score Wright which tied the game.  Pinto got out of the 5th only giving up 1 run.

Gardner replaced Pinto for the Marlins in the Top of the 6th, and Gardner retired the Mets in order.

Kensing replaced Gardner in the Top of the 7th, and Kensing pitched a scoreless inning.  In the Top of the 8th, Kensing walked Schneider with one out.  Gonzalez replaced Kensing with Tankersly.  Tankersly retired the two Mets he faced.

Gregg replaced Tankersly in the Top of the 9th, and Gregg pitched a scoreless 9th.

Miller replaced Gregg in the Top of the 10th, and Miller pitched a scoreless 10th.

On the Mound

Martinez was the starting pitcher for the Mets.  In the Bottom of the 1st, Martinez hit Ramirez with a pitch to give the Marlins a leadoff runner.  Uggla lined a 2-run shot to left to score Ramirez and himself.  Pedro got out of the 1st giving up 2 Runs.  In the Bottom of the 2nd, Gonzalez drove a solo shot to deep center to lead off the inning.  Amezaga beat out a ground ball to second base with one out, and then VandenHurk sacrifice bunted to advance Amezaga to second.  Ramirez drove the ball to the wall in right center for a triple scoring Amezaga.  Pedro walked Uggla to put runners on the corners before getting Jacobs to fly out to center.  After 2, Pedro gave up 4 runs.  Martinez retired the side in order in the Bottom of the 3rd.

In the Bottom of the 4th, Randolph came out to mound to pull Martinez because Pedro pulled his hamstring after getting the first batter out.  Sosa replaced Martinez.  Amezaga hit a ground rule double to right center off of Sosa.  Pinto sacrificed bunted to advance Amezaga to third.  Sosa intentionally walked Ramirez to put runners on the corners, but Sosa was able to get out of the 4th inning without any damage.  With 2 outs in the Bottom of the 5th, Sosa only gave up 1 Hit.  In the Bottom of the 6th, it was a little hectic, but Sosa got out of the inning without giving up any runs.

New York MetsThe Mets finally lost a game after another winning streak.  The theme of the day is that the Mets are bored of Spring Training and ready to take on the 2008 season.  Also, even some of the media has stated the same.  I have to agree with all of these parties because the season and the postseason is what matters.  I’m getting really excited about what ’08 could be.  So let the games begin!

John MaineThe Mets are currently playing their Wednesday night game against the Indians.  The Tribe has a 1-0 lead after 3.  So far, it seems like the Indians keep turning the double plays.  A 1-0 lead means nothing anymore, so there’s no reason why the Metsies can’t win this game with John Maine out on the mound.

Saturday’s Mets News: Mets Fans Pics Wanted

March 15, 2008 By: Keith Category: AL Central, AL East, Aaron Heilman, Arizona Diamondbacks, Brian Schneider, Colorado Rockies, David Wright, Die Hard Mets Fan, Jason Vargas, Johan Santana, John Maine, Jose Valentin, Kansas City Royals, Luis Castillo, MLB, NL Central, NL East, NL West, New York Mets, Pedro Martinez, Philadelphia Phillies, Ramon Castro, Scott Schoeneweis, Spring Training, St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, Willie Randolph Comments Off

The Mets dropped another Spring Training game to the Cards.  Like I said the last time the Mets lost to the Cardinals, I hate when that happens.

Once again, Die Hard Mets Fan would like to remind you that you can send us photos of you and your buddies in Mets gear so we can post it on the appropriate page above.  Click on one of the photo tabs in the header bar for more information.  Readers love to see pics of other Mets fans.  I can tell that many people find our fansite looking for photos of Mets fans and Mets tattoos, but there aren’t any yet.  We would greatly appreciate it if you send us some.

Note: We are looking for a few more Mets Bloggers to become a better Mets blog.  We are looking to cover many aspects of the Mets daily so you can more or less choose to write where your strenghts are.  If you are interested then please click on the ‘Write for Us’ link in the sidebar for more information.

Mets.com:

Castillo reaps benefits of slow return - Anthony DiComo lets us know that Luis Castillo feels great in his Grapefruit League debut.

Johan, Mets remain vexed by Cards - Anthony DiComo summarized today’s game between the Cardinals and the Mets.  The Cards beat the Mets 10-3.  Johan Santana got the start.  The Mets are 10-7-1 in the Grapefruit League standings.

Vargas seeks second opinion on hip - Anthony DiComo reported that ”Jason Vargas traveled to Colorado on Saturday for a second opinion on his sore left hip, which may require surgery.”

Camp nearing end, Mets roster ailing - Marty Noble stated that the calendar is counting down and the lineup remains incomplete.

Which teams have the best defense? - Lyle Spencer pointed out that MLB.com produced a list of the five premier defensive units heading into 2008.  This list includes these teams: New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, and Kansas City Royals.  Spencer explained why each of these teams made the list, and here is what he wrote about the Mets:

Johan Santana, whose glove is a matching accessory to his golden arm, will enjoy watching his new teammates pick it. Jose Reyes is the game’s premier defensive infielder in the view of advance scouts participating in MLB.com’s survey, and his partner on the left side, Gold Glover David Wright, also is first-rate. Ryan Church enhances an outfield that features Gold Glover Carlos Beltran and arguably the game’s best all-purpose sub in Endy Chavez. There are no serious chinks in manager Willie Randolph’s defensive armor.

Pitchers row laughs are par for course - Marty Noble revealed that Pedro Martinez was never into golfing like most MLB pitchers are, but now Martinez brought a golf bag to Spring Training, and said this to his colleagues, “You guys are going to teach me. If someone can tell me where to put my feet, I’ll be all right.”

Newsday:

Mets’ Valentin makes a major plea about his role - Anthony Rieber wrote that “Jose Valentin knows the Mets have made him no promises. He knows they signed Luis Castillo to a four-year contract to play second base. He also knows he signed a minor-league deal that allows the team to send him down if he doesn’t make the Opening Day roster.”  If Valentin does not make the team, he said, “I mean, I’m not going down there because they say I don’t make it. I don’t have to prove something in Triple-A. Money-wise, it’s not a big deal. I think that if I just shut it down right now and retire, I’ve still got enough money to live the rest of my life.”

New York Daily News:

Willie Randolph closes in on opener - Adam Rubin pointed out that Willie Randolph needs to get the full squad together in order to get ready for the season.

Jimmy Rollins repeats NL East boast - Here’s what Jimmy Rollins was quoted as saying in the April issue of Men’s Journal.  “That wasn’t a one-year thing. It’s still gonna ring true in 2008, and every year I’m with the Phillies. We’re going to win. It’s gonna come down to who wants it more, and we want to win more than the Mets do. Truthfully, I don’t worry about anybody in our division, or anybody in our league for that matter. I’m not worried about getting into the playoffs, because that part is accomplished. We’re a playoff team now. Our next goal is to win the World Series.”

New York Post:

BURNING QUESTION - Bart Hubbuch believes that Aaron Heilman has settled into the bullpen, but he still would prefer to be in the starting rotation.

Friday’s Mets News: Mets stomp Marlins

March 14, 2008 By: Keith Category: Angel Pagan, Brian Schneider, Carlos Beltran, Citi Field, Dwight Gooden, Florida Marlins, John Maine, MLB, NL East, New York Mets, Omar Minaya, Orlando Hernandez, Spring Training Comments Off

Citi FieldThe Mets picked up another ’w’ to give them their 10th in Spring Training.  The Amazins’ are playing .625 ball right now.  The regular season is right around the corner so let’s hope the Mets can continue to play hot baseball.  We learned from last season that a 7 game wasn’t enough so I hope the Mets stomp the NL and get to a 14 game lead in 2008.

Mets.com:

Mets will host All-Star Game, likely in 2013

Mets’ Pelfrey hasn’t done enough to earn a spot - Anthony Rieber feels like Mike Pelfrey hasn’t done enough to make Willie Randolph’s decision difficult.  I agree with Anthony, but I also don’t feel like El Duque hasn’t done anything either.  El Duque has only expressed how good he feels.  All along, I never felt like Pelfrey was going to be a great starter even though all of my friends that are Mets fans love him.  I say let Pelfrey start, find out what he’s got, and keep him or trade him after this season depending on his performance.  Give the kid a real shot.  Rieber also noted that Omar Minaya received the Peace Maker Award from Seeds of Peace, a non-profit organization, last night in Manhattan.

Angel PaganAngel Pagan seems like he can be a huge contributor with the Mets in ‘08.  I know it is Spring Training, and he isn’t facing the the elite, but he is smoking hot right now.  Pagan should easily make the roster.  He has a shot at starting in left field as well, unless the Mets use Endy.  The Mets should definitely take advantage of all of the hits that Angel has left in the bat.

Mets.com:

Veterans able to skip long road trip - Marty Noble noted that Martinez and Scott Schoeneweis are staying to pitch simulated games.

Newsday:

Beltran, Delgado struggle in return to lineup

Santana shows Bosox what might have been - David Lennon wrote, “A few hours before the game, Red Sox manager Terry Francona refused to comment about Santana but emphasized how much the organization values young players such as Lester. Still, Francona had to be a tiny bit envious as he watched Santana mow through his scoreless four innings with machine-like efficiency.”  Lennon also found out that Luis Castillo expects to be in the lineup either Thursday or Friday.

New York Daily News:

Pedro Martinez has final warmup before Grapefruit League start - The AP reported that ”Martinez’s first scheduled Grapefruit League game was rained out March 6 when the Mets were to play the Washington Nationals. He threw a simulated game, and the team then chose not to send him to Fort Myers on Tuesday.”

Sunday’s Mets News: Ban Barry Bonds

March 09, 2008 By: Keith Category: AL East, Baltimore Orioles, Billy Wagner, Brian Schneider, Duaner Sanchez, Fernando Martinez, Florida Marlins, Houston Astros, John Maine, Jonathan Niese, Jose Valentin, MLB, Mike Pelfrey, NL Central, NL East, New York Mets, Orlando Hernandez, Ryan Church, Steven Register No Comments →

John MaineAfter that 0-3 start, the Mets have won 8 of their last 9 to improve to an 8-4 record.  Not too shabby for a club that needs an ER in their dugout.  So many Mets are hurt that a few players come back each day.  Eventually they’ll be back to full strength.  These Barry Bonds rumors are really awful.  I don’t know which newspaper started the rumor, but it had to come from one of them.

The best Mets article of the day is “COLLECT ‘EM ALL!” by Joel Sherman of the New York Post so check it out below.

Mets.com:

Unhittable Maine carries Mets - Marty Noble summarized today’s game between the Astros and the Mets.  The Mets beat the Astros 3-0.  John Maine got the start and pitched 4 hitless innings.  The Mets are 8-4 in the Grapefruit League standings.

Young Mets top Orioles on the road - Spencer Fordin summarized yesterday’s game between the Mets and the Orioles.  The Mets beat the Orioles 4-1.  Jonathan Niese got the start.

Schneider, Easley go deep in loss - Anthony DiComo summarized yesterday’s game between the Marlins and the Mets.  The Marlins beat the Mets 12-4.  Mike Pelfrey got the start.

El Duque has sights set on starting

Notes: Sanchez returns to action - According to Anthony DiComo, Duaner Sanchez pitched one inning yesterday against the Marlins and said he felt like “I was 97 percent of what you watched in ‘06. I could say 100, but I don’t want to be crazy.”  Jose Valentin was expected to make his debut today playing either first base or second base.  Ryan Church was cleared to play yesterday and played.  Church finished the day with 2 singles.  When the Mets cut 13 players on Friday, Steven Register did not get cut.

Newsday:

Fifth spot for Mets? Duque confident; Pelfrey hit - David Lennon provides the status for the 5th spot in the rotation.

Now starting in left for Mets … Barry Bonds? - That is the dumbest idea that I’ve ever heard.  And then we can add Sammy Sosa in center and Mark McGwire in right.  David Lennon included excerpts from Mets players, and they don’t want Bonds either.  That’s relieving.

New York Daily News:

Mets laugh off reports they have any interest in signing Barry Bonds

Pedro Martinez, wife committed to making a difference in Dominican - Christian Red wrote about how Pedro and Carolina Martinez, appear at a charity dinner in December in Santo Domingo that was part of their foundation’s effort to help underprivileged girls in the Dominican Republic.

El Duque starts to talk the talk; Mike Pelfrey gets shelled

Newest Mets return, make good impression - Peter Botte lets us know how Church and Brian Schneider felt after playing yesterday.

New York Post:

COLLECT ‘EM ALL! - Joel Sherman says that the Mets should sign Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens so they can discuss steroids and their legal troubles.

PELFREY TAKES STEP BACK IN BATTLE FOR FIFTH SPOT

DEARTH VALLEY - Joel Sherman explains the lack of depth that the Mets have since giving up 4 players for Johan Santana.

WEAPONS FOR WAGS - Bart Hubbuch noted that Billy Wagner added a curveball and a change-up to his arsenal because Wagner felt like hitters were catching up to him.

New York Times:

Mets Are Happy to See Some Familiar Faces
