Friday’s Giants News: Big Blue re-signed Ward

March 14, 2008 By: Keith Category: Danny Clark, David Carr, Derrick Ward, NFC East, NFL, New York Giants Comments Off

Derrick WardI’m thrilled that the Giants re-signed Derrick Ward to a one-year deal.  However, I felt like he should have gotten more than a one-year contract.  From what I saw on the field, I thought Ward was the best all around back that the Giants had in 2007.  We know that Jacobs is a powerful back that wears out defenses, but he is unable to catch the ball whether it’s on a screen or a check down dump off that Eli has to make.  We also learned that Brandon gets hurt often for being too physical.  We know Bradshaw is the speedy back, but had some fumbling issues.  We haven’t seen Bradshaw play an entire game yet either.  Ward is a back who’s size is in the middle of Jacobs and Bradshaw, who can run up the gut, who can run to either side, and can catch the ball.  Since Ward has all of the tools to be a lead back, I don’t understand why the Giants didn’t go after Ward more aggresively.  The Giants allowed Derrick to go into free agency, and nobody picked him up which led to the Giants giving him a one-year deal.

Giants, Jets announce CEO for New Meadowland Stadium - Michael Eisen pointed out that the Giants and the Jets announced that Mark Lamping, who is the current President of the St. Louis Cardinals, has been named Chief Executive Officer of the new state-of-the-art stadium in the Meadowlands.  I was unaware that a stadium needed a CEO.  I guess the CEO of the Giants and the CEO of the Jets did not have the necessary qualifications.

Thursday’s Giants News: Jints add Danny Clark

March 13, 2008 By: Keith Category: Danny Clark, David Carr, Kevin Dockery, Michael Johnson, Michael Strahan, NFC East, NFL, New York Giants Comments Off

Danny ClarkFinally, the Giants are making a little splash in Free Agency.  It seemed like Sammy Knight was going to be the only free agent that the G-MEN would add, but now Big Blue signed David Carr and Danny Clark this week.  Carr is a former #1 pick who is going to fight for the backup QB role against Jared Lorenzen and Anthony Wright.  Carr only costed the Giants $1 million.  Danny Clark is going to compete for the outside linebacker position.  The rumors are that Clark got a 2-year deal worth $4 million.  So we have 3 starting linebackers, but the Giants will have to add some depth.  That’s what the Draft is for…

Giants.com:

Giants add veteran LB Clark - Michael Eisen reported that the Giants signed Danny Clark and provided a Bio on him.  Eisen also got Tom Coughlin’s and Jerry Reese’s thoughts about Clark.

Danny Clark is a player I drafted a few years ago in Jacksonville,” Coughlin said. “We’re bringing him in as an outside linebacker. He is a very physical, very versatile player. Over the years, he has been a very good special teams player. Clark is a veteran guy with an outstanding work ethic. He will fit in well with our players in the locker room. He will have an opportunity to compete for a position.”

“He is a veteran linebacker who can play all three spots,” general manager Jerry Reese said. “He has been an outstanding special teams player. He is going to create competition in both areas, special teams and at linebacker. He fits the New York Giant mold.”

Giants sign QB David Carr - Michael Eisen reported that the Giants signed David Carr and provided a Bio on him.

Newsday:

Giants’ Strahan still up in air about retirement - Bob Glauber captured Michael Strahan’s thoughts on retirement:

I can’t say I don’t love to play and don’t love to see the guys, but when I see guys like Favre and Sapp and [Chiefs guard] Will Shields, all these guys who are players from my era, say, ‘Enough’s enough’ … Sometimes, you wake up and your body is hurting and you’re thinking, ‘Man, maybe enough is enough.’ You think about it.

Wednesday’s Giants News: Giants Signed Carr

March 12, 2008 By: Keith Category: David Carr, NFC East, NFL, New York Giants No Comments →

David CarrThe New York Giants signed David Carr as the backup QB to Eli Manning.  I think that this is a good thing for the G-MEN.  However, I would rather watch my man Jared Lorenzen play during the Preseason.  Since Preseason is meaningless, at least I can chuckle a bit when his nicknames (The Hefty Lefty and J-Load) flash across the screen.  I don’t know if we’ll get to laugh at Carr as much as I get to laugh at Lorenzen.  There has to be some entertainment value in the Preseason.

New York Post:

CLARK TO VISIT GIANTS - Paul Schwartz reported that strong side LB Danny Clark is scheduled to visit the Giants.  In 2000, Clark was drafted by Tom Coughlin in Jacksonville, and played 3 out of his 4 years as a Jaguar under Coughlin.  Since then, Danny spent two seasons in Oakland, one season in New Orleans, and one season in Houston.

New York Times:

Otto Schnellbacher, Two-Sport Star at Kansas, Dies at 84 - Richard Goldstein stated that “Otto Schnellbacher, a football and basketball star at the University of Kansas who became an all-pro defensive back for the N.F.L. Giants and also played pro basketball, died Monday at his home in Topeka, Kan. He was 84.”  Cancer was the reason, according to his son Otto II.  Die Hard Giants Fan would like to send out condolences to Otto, the entire Schnellbacher family, and the New York Giants for their loss.

The Star-Ledger:

Eli, meet your new backup - Paul Needell and Jenny Vrentas reported that David Carr agreed to terms of a one-year deal with the Giants.  The contract is still being written so the terms haven’t been dislosed yet.
