Friday’s Giants News: Rookie Mini-Camp

May 09, 2008 By: Keith Category: Antonio Pierce, Bryan Kehl, Eric Butler, Jerry Reese, Jonathan Goff, Kenny Phillips, Mario Manningham, NFC East, NFL, New York Giants, Owen Tolson, Terrell Thomas, Tom Coughlin Comments Off

According to Mike Florio over at ProFootballTalk.com, the Cowboys got their eye on the Lions WR Roy Williams.  In order to obtain Williams, the Cowboys might have to give up their Safety Roy Williams.  How many times has a player been traded for a player with the same name?  I hope Jerry Jones keeps his Safety because he can’t tackle, the NFL implemented a penalty called the Horsecollar because he misses the first tackle and has to get the guy down to the ground somehow.

Pair of Giants Honored - Michael Eisen pointed out that GM Jerry Reese and MLB Antonio Pierce received the 2008 Man of the Year awards from MAN (Minority Athletes Networking).  Eisen described MAN as,

A not-for-profit organization co-founded by former Giants Ron Johnson and George Martin in 1989, is dedicated to positively influencing the lives of disadvantaged youth in the tri-state area. The MAN scholarship/mentorship program has awarded more than $800,000 to more than 200 students.

Congrats to JR and AP.

  • TE Eric Butler of Mississippi State
  • Punter Owen Tolson of Army

Newsday:

Giants rookies Kehl, Goff are athletic, and smart - Tom Rock wrote up an article about Bryan Kehl and Jonathan Goff.  The Giants selected Kehl in the 4th round and Goff in the 5th round.  Rock noted how both players went to prestigious schools, and they should have no problem learning the playbooks.

JINTS GET FEELING OF SAFETY WITH ROOKIE - Paul Schwartz pointed out that Kenny Phillips has his first chance to make an impression today during the start of the two-day rookie mini-camp at Giants Stadium.  Here’s what Coach Coughlin thinks of Phillips, “I think that he will compete. Obviously he is a young player with a lot to learn. He is going to come in and he is going to be humble and try to learn as much as he possibly can, but there is no doubt he has to be excited because of the opportunity.”

Monday’s Giants News: NFL Draft Weekend

April 28, 2008 By: Keith Category: Andre' Woodson, Bryan Kehl, Chris Mara, Glenn Bujnoch, Jeremy Shockey, Jerry Reese, Jonathan Goff, Kenny Phillips, Marc Ross, Mario Manningham, Michael Strahan, NFC East, NFL, Nate Robinson, New York Giants, Terrell Thomas, Wallace Gilberry Comments Off

I got back from South Carolina around midnight.  Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get anything done down there.  I also wasn’t able to check out what happened in the NFL Draft, MLB, or NHL.  I apologize to all of you for that.

Kenny PhillipsA few Mock Drafts had the Giants picking Kenny Phillips in the first round.  That turned out to be accurate.  From what I’ve read, the Giants are very happy with that pick.  I never heard of Phillips until he starting appearing in the Mock Drafts.  The Giants signed Terrell Thomas in the second round, and I never heard of him before.  Out of the players that the Giants signed, I’ve only seen Mario Manningham play and he’s the real deal.  Overall, the Giants stated that they are happy with who they selected.  I hope that turns out to be accurate.  It makes me feel better when the team says they are content with how it all played out.

Transcript: GM Jerry Reese - Michael Eisen had a Q&A Session with Reese regarding Manningham.

Giants select WR Mario Manningham - Michael Eisen reported that the Giants selected Michigan WR Mario Manningham in the third round.  Eisen captured the Reese’s thoughts of Manningham,

We did our homework on him. Yesterday you guys talked about (first-round choice) Kenny Phillips and why didn’t we bring him in. There really wasn’t a lot to bring him in for. We brought this young man in. Our coaches spent a lot of time with him. We interviewed him at the combine. We did our homework on him. He has tremendous value right now where we are picking. We think he will be okay.

He convinced me, he convinced our coaches – and it’s well documented – that he made a couple of mistakes. He is a young kid. He is a junior. So hopefully he learned from his mistakes and he will come in here and he will give us a big play threat on the outside. This guy has got the production you want. He has got a big strike on the outside. He gets big strikes on the outside. And that was attractive for us.

Talent-wise, I think the guy could have really gone in the first row,” Reese said. “But at this point at the bottom of the third row, we think this is a guy that has great value and he is talented. He is really talented. And again, we did our homework on him. We have a couple of different testing agencies, psychological testing and stuff that we did with him. We are satisfied that he will be okay. And obviously when he comes in, probably kind of like Ahmad (Bradshaw) last year, we will bring him in and say, ‘Look, this is what it is going to be and we expect you to do that.’ And hopefully he will do that.

Bradshaw also had some collegiate issues off the field and was told told he would be on a short leash after being drafted in the seventh round by the Giants. Bradshaw became an important contributor late in the season and in the playoffs.

If you are screwing up, we are not going to spend a lot of time on you. You are on a short leash, just like Ahmad last year – I don’t care if you are seventh round or third round (choice). If you come in here and do the wrong things, we are not going to tolerate that. We don’t think he will do that.

Terrell Thomas Bio

Kenny Phillips Bio

Giants select CB Terrell Thomas - Michael Eisen reported that the Giants selected USC CB Terrell Thomas in the second round.  Eisen found out what Ross thought of the pick, and he wrote up a Bio about Thomas.  Ross stated that,

We don’t draft like that, by need. I think that is when you get hurt, when you say, ‘We need this, we need to take a corner, we need to take this.’ How the board falls and how we have them stacked, that is how we take them. I wouldn’t classify them as need picks.

We are happy we got two good football players. We didn’t go in saying we have to take two defensive guys or two offensive guys. We went in and stuck with our board and took two football players we really like. We didn’t have a game plan in mind of what positions or what side of the ball. We just wanted to get good football players.

2008 Draft Blog - John Schmeelk covered the first round of the Draft.

Giants select safety Kenny Phillips - Michael Eisen reported that the Giants took University of Miami safety Kenny Phillips with the first round pick.  Eisen captured the thoughts of Reese and Coughlin about this regarding this pick, and he put together a Bio about Phillips.  Jerry Reese stated had this to say,

We got nice value and we got a need position as well. That’s what we like to do in the draft. We don’t want to reach for guys. We got what we wanted. We got need and value with this pick.

Tom Coughlin stated that,

We were pleased to have the opportunity to draft a player of Kenny Phillips’ ability when we did in the bottom of the first round. We had him ranked high. We had him as the best safety on the board. It is a need position for us. He is an excellent football player. He is a guy that will come down in the box and tackle and can play in coverage. He has played over wide receivers during his career. He has a career which gives you the balance and the versatility of a player of his ability with his interceptions, his tackles, etcetera. We are excited to have an opportunity to draft this player. There is great value in this pick and it is a need position, so we have been able to accomplish a bunch of things here with Kenny Phillips.

Thursday’s Giants News: Pacman to Big D

April 24, 2008 By: Keith Category: Corey Webster, Dallas Cowboys, Eli Manning, Jeremy Shockey, Jerry Reese, NFC East, NFL, New York Giants, Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans Comments Off

Adam 'Pacman' JonesI’m sure all of you Giants fans know that the Cowboys got Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones from the Titans already.  Ed Werner of ESPN.com reported that,

Sources tell Werder that Dallas will send its fourth-round pick (the 126th overall) in Saturday’s draft to the Titans for Jones. There are also conditions attached to the trade related to Jones being reinstated by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and how much he plays for the Cowboys. If he plays a significant amount of time in 2008, the Titans will get an additional pick from the Cowboys in 2009. If he doesn’t get reinstated by the NFL, sources said the Cowboys get the Titans’ fourth-round pick in 2009.

The big issue here is whether or not Commissioner Roger Goodell will reinstate Pacman.  Prior to Goodell, these players never even got suspended for any wrong doing.  I don’t know what the Commissioner is going to do here because there isn’t a track record yet.  He has two options: 1) Reinstate a player that has been suspended. 2) Don’t reinstate a player that has been suspended.  We know that Goodell will suspend players, but we don’t know what will happen after the suspension is over yet.  My gut tells me that the Commissioner will reinstate Jones, but I believe that this guy should never play football again.  Another rumor surfaced this week.  According to ESPN.com, “Adam ‘Pacman’ Jones paid “extortion” money to a 29-year-old man arrested for a Las Vegas strip club shooting that left a club employee paralyzed, police said.”  We’ll have to see how all of this plays out.  It all sound very Ray Lewis-ish and Kobe Bryant-ish to me, and they all still play.

According to Clare Farnsworth of Seattlepi.com, the Seattle Seahawks have no interest in Shockey.

Newsday:

Giants’ first pick must bled in with champions - Tom Rock dissuses the concept of drafting a player that is going to gel with a Championship team.  That is the pressure that lies on Jerry Reese this weekend.

New York Daily News:

Giants get picky over Jeremy Shockey - Ralph Vacchiano summarized the overall Jeremy Shocky situation.

Prediction: Giants will select Miami’s Kenny Phillips in NFL Draft - Ralph Vacciano predicted that Big Blue will select Miami Safety Kenny Phillips with the 31st pick.  Pat Kirwan of NFL.com had the G-MEN picking Phillips in his Mock Draft that I wrote about on Monday.  If you missed that post and want to check out Phillips’ Draft Player Profile then check it out on ‘Monday’s Giants News: More Mock Drafts’.

Monday’s Giants News: More Mock Drafts

April 21, 2008 By: Keith Category: Brandon Jacobs, Eli Manning, Jerry Reese, Marc Ross, NFC East, NFL, New York Giants Comments Off

I have been waiting for NFL.com to release their pick for the New York Football Giants.  They finally did today.  The funny thing about it was that they asked Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star Ledger, to make the 31st overall pick for the New York Giants in the NFL.com 2008 Mock Draft.  In this video clip, Garafolo believes that the Giants will pick Jerod Mayo.  NFL.com put together a Draft Player Profile on Mayo if you want to check it out.

NFL.com has other Mock Drafts as well.  In Mock Draft, Mike Mayock wrote this analysis about the Giants, “The Super Bowl champions need a legit No. 2 wide receiver opposite Plaxico Burress. Mario Manningham has a big-time skill set, if his work ethic can improve and he stays out of trouble, he can be a home-run hitter for the Giants.”.  Mayock has the Giants taking Michigan Wide Receiver Mario Manningham.  NFL.com put together a Draft Player Profile on Manningham.  In Mock Draft 4.0, Pat Kirwan wrote this analysis about the Giants, “The Giants see a few good players fall to them at the bottom of the draft and have already told me they are very happy to stay right where they are. Phillips is the best safety in the draft and the Giants need one. Their division is loaded with match up tight ends that expose poor cover safeties.”  Kirwan has the Giants selecting Miami Safety Kenny Phillips.  NFL.com put together a Draft Player Profile on Phillips.  In Mock Draft 5.0, Vic Carucci wrote this analysis about the Giants, “The Giants would like to move outside linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end, his natural position. Mayo would allow them to do so.”  Like the NFL.com pick, Carucci has the Giants selecting Tennessee Line Backer Jerod Mayo also.  The Draft Player Profile on Mayo is above.

Newsday:

Giants unlikely to draft last-minute interviewees - Tom Rock believes that the Giants are not going to draft any of the players that have worked out at Giants Stadium recently.  This is something that Mike Garafolo of The Star-Ledger has pointed out multiple times as well.  Jerry Reese makes it seem like the Giants are interested in players that they are not going to draft, then they draft somebody else.  An example of this is when the Giants drafted Aaron Ross in last years draft.  Jerry Reese never showed any interest in Ross prior to the draft, and obviously the Giants selected him in the first round.

Eli Manning marries college sweetheart Abby McGrew

New York Daily News:

Eli calls honeymoon audible - Jo Piazza and Bill Hutchinson pointed out that Abby and Eli Manning had originally planned to stay at the Mexican resort for a few more days, but changed to a secret destination at the last minute.

Giants have select talent in top scout - Mike Garafolo gathered the thoughts of Marc Ross and Jerry Reese about their roles in the Giants franchise.

Sunday’s Giants News: Draft Talk

April 20, 2008 By: Keith Category: Eli Manning, Jeremy Shockey, Jerry Reese, Marc Ross, NFC East, NFL, New York Giants Comments Off

The print media wrote about the NFL Draft today so you know it’s right around the corner.  It’s next weekend in case you forgot.  I’ve been pumped about it for a while now.  Just like the media wants to know if Reese will continue to make great choices, I want to know the same thing.  I’m sure all of us Giants fans want to know the same thing.  I’m not to concerned about that though because I trust the Giants organization to do the right thing.

Newsday:

After high-impact drafts, Giants can cruise - Tom Rock believes that the Giants don’t have many glaring needs to fill in the NFL Draft next week so the Giants don’t have much pressure on them to have to get it right.  Also, Rock reminded us that Jerry Reese is only the GM this year meaning that he’s no longer the director of player personnel.  Last year, he wore both hats because he was the director of player personnel for the previous five years.  This year, Marc Ross is the director of college scouting so it is imperative that the Reese and Ross tandem get off to a great start.

New York Daily News:

Giants eye more Jerry Reese picking - Ralph Vacciano reminds us of how well of a Draft Jerry Reese had last year, and he’s anxious to see if he has similar success this year.

Jeremy Shockey trade waves - Gary Myers thinks it would be crazy for the Giants to trade Jeremy ShockeyThe problem is that if he’s not happy, he’s not going to produce.  He’s going to whine.  In one of the articles I wrote about yesterday, he threatened to sit on the bench if his role was not changed.  So if you are the Giants, do you keep him if he is going to sit on the bench?  Do you keep him if he plays but his desire is to sit on the bench?  Or do you trade him for market value and bring in somebody else that wants to be on the team?

Giants’ Eli Manning married in Mexico - Jo Piazza covered Abby and Eli Manning’s wedding down in San Jose de Cabo, Mexico.  They have a photo of the couple, and if you click on it then there is an entire photo gallery.

New York Post:

GIANTS ON THE CLOCK - Paul Schwartz also wrote that Jerry Reese wants to repeat last year’s Draft success.

Friday’s Giants News: Pre-Draft Press Conference

April 18, 2008 By: Keith Category: Jeremy Shockey, Jerry Reese, Michael Strahan, NFC East, NFL, New York Giants Comments Off

Jerry ReeseThe NFL Draft is only one week away which is why Jerry Reese gave his pre-draft press conference yesterday.  As you can see by the amount of articles below, the New York media was on it like a pit bull on a poodle.  I always get so pumped up about the Draft because I want to know who’s going to contribute in the upcoming season.

Over at The Blue Screen, Ralph Vacciano wrote about the status of injured players which is something nobody has discussed in months.  “Reese said Shockey (broken leg), WR Plaxico Burress (ankle/knee/shoulder), RB Derrick Ward (leg) and Kiwanuka (leg) are all on schedule with their rehabs and should be ready to participate when training camp opens in late July.”

Newsday:

Giants GM: Strahan up in air; not shopping Shockey - Tom Rock provided a couple of quick bits about the Giants.  Jerry Reese stated that Michael Strahan will not make his decision to return by next week’s NFL Draft, and Strahan’s decision will not have any effect on what they are going to do in the Draft.  Regarding Jeremy Shockey, Reese stated, “Everybody is tradable, no matter what. Anything can happen in personnel, guys, I always say that. But right now, Jeremy Shockey is our starting tight end and we are looking forward for him to be back on the field for us this fall.”  Knowing that the rumors have been surfacing for months already, you can interpret that however you want.

New York Daily News:

Giants still awaiting Michael Strahan’s retirement decision - Ralph Vacciano put together a similar article about Strahan to the one Tom Rock wrote above.

New York Post:

CALLS OF DUTY - In case you don’t understand the title (I know I don’t), Paul Schwartz also put together an article about Jeremy.

GIANTS NOT LOOKING TO TRADE SHOCKEY

Jeremy Shockey OK with trade talk - According to Ralph Vacchiano, “Jeremy Shockey has not formally demanded a trade from the Giants, but he has made it very clear he wouldn’t be upset if it happened, either.”  Vacchiano didn’t include any quotes from Shockey so I don’t know where Shockey “made it very clear he wouldn’t be upset if it happened”.

New York Times:

Giants Waiting Before Deciding on Draft

The Star-Ledger:

Report: Shockey wants out

Reese confirms Shockey trade talk

TE/FB Tereshinski visits - Mike Garafolo found out that Wake Forest TE/FB John Tereshinski will also work out with the Giants.  Rather than writing anything about Tereshinski, Garafolo included this YouTube video clip.

Trade Rumors: Shockey to Saints Continues

April 10, 2008 By: Keith Category: Jeremy Shockey, Jerry Reese, NFC East, NFC South, NFL, New Orleans Saints, New York Giants Comments Off

Jeremy ShockeyEvery time there was any speculation about Jeremy Shockey getting traded to the New Orleans Saints, Jerry Reese said that Shockey is the Giants Tight End in 2008.  These rumors began in February, and they have resurfaced a few times.  The last time was about a month ago.  ProFootballTalk.com found out that:

Renewed talk of a possible trade is emerging, from an unlikely source.  Several readers have pointed out to us that WWE announcer Jim Ross has posted the following entry on his blog:  “Reggie Bush was also at [WrestleMania] 24 and was hanging around Snoop Dogg’s trailer most of the afternoon on Sunday.  My sources tell me that the New York Giants are going to trade outstanding TE Jeremy Shockey to Bush’s Saints, prior to the NFL draft.  Shockey is an Oklahoma kid from Ada who told me last week he was looking forward to playing for the Saints.”

From a Giants fan perspective, Shockey is a touchy subject because we love his offensive smashmouth style of play yet we don’t know if he really is disruptive to the team.  Or more importantly, is he disruptive to Eli as some suggest?  Should he stay or should he go is the question?  Everybody has made up their minds about that topic already.  Above, Jim Ross describes how Reggie Bush was hanging around Snoop Dogg’s trailor at Wrestlemania 24, but he didn’t write anything about Jeremy until the final sentence where he claimed that Shockey told him that he “is looking forward to playing for the Saints”.  It seems like the source is Jeremy himself, and the NFL Draft is only two weeks away.  So if this goes down as rumored, we’ll know about it by the end of the month.

Wednesday’s Giants News: Donations

April 02, 2008 By: Keith Category: George Martin, Jerry Reese, Michael Strahan, NFC East, NFL, New York Giants, Sam Madison Comments Off

George MartinGeorge Martin is one of the classiest people to ever put on a Giants uniform.  He is walking across the country to raise money for those who suffered in the 9/11 attacks.  Martin began walking in September 2007, and was about halfway across the country during the Super Bowl.  We already know that Martin has been doing this, but I would like to say I’m proud of my boys in blue for donating to ”a Journey for 9/11“.  If you would like to donate to “a Journey for 9/11″, click here.

Giants.com:

Sam Madison Q&A - Michael Eisen had a Q&A Session with Sam Madison about the Super Bowl run.

Giants donate to the Journey - Michael Eisen noted that Giants’ players donated $40,000 to George Martin’s “a Journey for 9/11“.

New York Daily News:

NFL defenses will be armed with radio helmets starting next season - Ralph Vacchiano and Gary Meyers wrote that, “The Giants and Jets were among teams voting Tuesday to approve radio helmets for the defensive signal caller to receive the plays from the sideline, bringing it equality with the coach-to-quarterback system used since 1994 and eliminating any chance of SpyGate II.”

Jerry Reese expects to see Michael Strahan in Giants’ camp - According to Gary Meyers, Jerry Reese stated this about Michael Strahan’s retirement situation, “We haven’t had any conversation right now.  We’ll sit down and he’ll let me know if he wants to play or not.  My gut feeling is I think he will play another year.  That’s just my gut feeling.  That may be out in left field somewhere.”

Tuesday’s Giants News

March 04, 2008 By: Keith Category: Jerry Reese, NFC East, NFL, New York Giants, Plaxico Burress, Sammy Knight No Comments →

Brett FavreThe biggest news for the fans of the New York Football Giants was the signing of Sammy Knight.  You can check all of that out below.  Bigger NFL news was Brett Favre announcing his retirement this morning.  Favre is going out after leading a young team to the NFC Championship game before getting beat by the Big Blue Wrecking Crew in Lambeau Field.  Favre threw an interception to our boy, Corey Webster, in Overtime.  This interception is what led to Bob Papa saying “Lawrence Tynes just kicked the Giants to the Super Bowl”.  Favre is a classy dude.  Die Hard Giants Fan would like to wish him well in retirement.  We’ll miss what he does out there on the field, but we don’t have to face him head-to-head anymore either…

Last week, the official Green Bay Packers website announced Brett Favre’s retirement.  The home page announced Brett Favre’s retirement on the left side and Packers news on right side.  This took place before Brett Favre announced his retirement so it was a hint that it was probably going to take place.  After a few hours, the Packers removed the portion dedicated to Favre, claimed that it was a test page, and stated that Brett was not retiring.  Last year, Favre wanted Randy Moss to become a Packer, but it didn’t happen because Moss went to New England.  This year, there is a rumor out there that Favre retired because the Packers didn’t get Moss.  Moss resigned with New England yesterday, and Favre announced his retirement today so the timing of all of this makes it seem like the rumor has some truth to it.  So long Brett!

Giant.com:

Tri-State Leadership Forum - The home of the Giants hosted USA Football’s first Tri-State Leadership Forum.

What They’re Saying - Fans react to the signing of FA Safety Sammy Knight.

Giants ink safety Knight - The Giants signed Safety Sammy Knight to a three-year deal.

Newsday:

Giants sign free-agent safety Knight - Sammy Knight, 32, signed a three-year, $5.15 million contract that included a $1.25 million signing bonus with Big Blue.  Along with playing, Knight will be able to groom the young players just like Madison and McQuarters did.  Three years seems a little long to me though.  Sammy will be 35 by the time the contract expires.

New York Daily News:

Jerry Reese not silent this time around, signs Sammy Knight for Giants

Needell: Brett and me - Paul Needle describes some classic Brett Favre moments.

Favre calls it a career - The AP lets you know all about Brett Favre announcing his retirement this morning.

NY Giants fill Wilson void, sign Knight

Report: Knight close to signing - Prior to the deal becoming official, Mike Garafolo let us know the status.

A quick math lesson - Mike Garafolo reported that the Patriots resigned Randy Moss to a three-year contract worth $27 million.  Garafolo believes that Plaxico Burress is going to use that to his advantage when attempting to renegotiate his contract.
