Empire State BuildingThe Mets have to opportunity to go into the Bronx and sweep the Yankees tonight.  Even though it’s just interleague play, the Amazin’s do need to win some games to improve upon their less than stellar record.  We all know how great Wang has been during the regular season of the past two seasons, but maybe Oli can keep our boys from Queens in the game tonight.  Or maybe the Mets can figure out how to get Wang out of the game as fast as possible so they can get to the bullpen.  After the Mets sweep the Yankees, the Mets travel to Atlanta tomorrow and play a four-game series with the Braves.  It begins with a day/night double header on Tuesday.

Final Score: New York Mets 7 - New York Yankees 4.  The MLB.com Box Score is attached.  Johan Santana (5-2) got the win and Andy Pettitte (3-5) got the loss.

Since the Mets have been playing w-l-w-l-w-l baseball and they lost two before winning today, I think that the Mets will win tomorrow as well to go on a two-game winning streak.  It’s a pattern.  So the Mets should sweep this mini-series, and then I expect them to lose their first game (or more than one game) in Atlanta to continue the trend that the Mets have set.  After the losing streak, the Mets will win exactly that many games.  I just wish the Mets could put it together when playing the division.

Anyway, the Mets played a pretty good game today.  They took the first game from the Yankees in the Bronx.  Santana gave up 4 runs on 3 homers, but he pitched 8.2 innings before handing the ball off to Wagner for a four-out save.  Pettitte came out smoking hot early on, but then the Mets batted around in the 4th inning.  The Mets scored 3 runs in the 4th inning, but they should’ve scored a whole lot more.  After the bases were loaded, a hit out of the infield would’ve ended this game early.  Fortunately for the Mets, Reyes and Wright were each able to homer over the short porch in right in the 7th for some insurance runs.  In the 9th, Delgado was able cash in by driving in Beltran.  So 7 runs were enough today.  Perez will face Wang tomorrow night so it seems like the edge is in the Yankees favor, but Perez has a pretty good record against the Yankees.  Last year, the Mets hit Wang well the first time they faced him but Wang was lights out the second time around.  We’ll see how it plays out tomorrow.

Friday’s Mets News: Subway Series

May 16, 2008 By: Keith Category: AL East, Billy Wagner, Johan Santana, Jose Reyes, Luis Castillo, MLB, NL, NL East, New York Mets, New York Yankees, SNY, Shea Stadium, Washington Nationals, Willie Randolph Comments Off

Subway SeriesThe 2008 Subway Series will begin tonight, if it stops raining.  And man is it raining.  Tonight’s game will probably get postponed.  If you’ve followed what I’ve written then you’d know that I think the Subway Series is overhyped Interleague play.  I’m not a fan of Interleague games at all.  It wouldn’t bother me if they eliminated it from the schedule.  If they did it at all, I think that it would be better if they did it like the NFL where each NL division plays a specific AL division per year and then it alternates annually.  That way, each division plays the same opponents.  For instance, if the NL East played the AL East in 2008, then if the NL East played AL Central in 2009, and so on.  It seems like the Interleague play goes on forever.  Or is it that the MLB season goes on forever?  I don’t know.  And then there is the difference in rules which is the dumbest thing in sports.  That doesn’t happen in the NFL, NBA, or the NHL.  The difference in rules is buch league.  Anyway, here’s the probable pitching matchups for the weekend:

  • 04/16/2008 - Johan Santana (4-2) - Darrell Rasner (2-0)
  • 04/17/2008 - Oliver Perez (3-3) - Andy Pettitte (3-4)

Thursday’s Mets News: Mets Fall to Nats

May 15, 2008 By: Keith Category: AL East, Aaron Heilman, Claudio Vargas, Johan Santana, Luis Castillo, MLB, Moises Alou, NL East, New York Mets, New York Yankees, Pedro Martinez, Scott Schoeneweis, Washington Nationals Comments Off

If you remember how I was bitching yesterday that Santana shouldn’t have been held back a day to face the Yankees because the division is more important then listen to what I’m pissed off about now.  That was before last night’s game and today’s game.  How good of a game did Vargas pitch last night?  He pitched 6.1 Innings allowing 3 Hits and 2 Runs.  Pretend that was Johan’s line, and then Heilman came in and gave up 4 Runs while only recording one out.  Or better yet, how great was Pelfrey today?  He pitched 7.2 Innings allowing 3 Hits and 1 Run.  The Bullpen subsequently came in and put up zeroes.  Santana was suppposed to pitch today so pretend that he pitched as great as Pelfrey did.  The problem is that the Mets wouldn’t have won either game because the offense sucks.

The only thing the Mets did differently today is mess up that w-l-w-l-w-l thing.  Now, they lost two in a row to the last place Nats…and at home to boot.  The Mets lost the series 3 games to 1, and the Mets finished the homestand with a 3-4 record against the Reds and the Nationals.  It’s kind of pathetic.

Wednesday’s Mets News: Santana Moved to Face Yankees

May 14, 2008 By: Keith Category: Angel Pagan, Citi Field, Claudio Vargas, Fernando Tatis, Jeff Wilpon, Johan Santana, John Maine, Jorge Sosa, MLB, Matt Wise, NL East, Nelson Figueroa Jr., New York Mets, Ryan Church, Washington Nationals Comments Off

Johan SantanaI’ve read a bunch of articles about everyone thinks that the Mets are doing the right thing by holding back Johan Santana until Friday night against the Yankees.  I strongly disagree with this concept, and I can care less what the Mets do in the interleague games.  The Mets need to win as many interleague games as possible, but not as much as they need to win division games and NL games.  The Mets make sure that their aces face the Yankees every year.  Last season, if they lost one more game against the Yankees and won one more game in their division then they would’ve won the NL East and played in the Playoffs.  The Mets are playing a four-game series against the Nationals right now.  They lost one already so they need to slam the door on the Nats.  So I believe Santana should remain in his normal spot.  Should New York bragging rights cost the Mets the division title?

May 11, 2008 By: Keith Category: Aaron Heilman, Billy Wagner, Bobby Valentine, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Cincinnati Reds, David Wright, Die Hard Mets Fan, Johan Santana, Luis Castillo, MLB, Mike Pelfrey, NL Central, NL East, New York Mets, Shea Stadium, Willie Randolph Comments Off

Die Hard Mets Fan would like to wish you a Happy Mother’s Day!  The Mets won the weekend series against the Reds, and then the Nats are coming to Queens tomorrow for a four-game series.  Hopefully, we can continue to watch the Metsies beat up on the scrubs of the NL.  Next weekend begins the first interleague series, and the Mets will be in the Bronx for the weekend for the first Subway Series of ‘08.

Strained left quad stops Castillo - Marty Noble reported that Luis Castillo had to leave today’s game against the Reds because he strained his left quad in the 5th Inning.

Pelfrey undergoing transformation - Marty Noble stated that last night’s loss to the Reds was in some ways a moral victory for Mike Pelfrey because he pitched 6 innings allowing 2 runs.  After a couple of poor performances, Pelfrey made some changes which led to an improved outing last night.  His teammates informed him that he was tipping off his pitches by chewing on his mouthpiece when he threw fastballs, but not when he threw breaking balls.  So one change was getting rid of the mouthpiece, and the other change was not using what he claims is his best pitch (the two seam fastball) because it hasn’t been successful lately.

Lucky 7th for Carlos Delgado - Mark Lelinwalla describes how successful Carlos Delgado was when batting in the seventh spot of the lineup in yesterday’s day game against the Reds.

Junior achievements wow Willie - Since the Reds are in town and Griffey is close to hitting his 600th Home Run, Anthony McCarron found out what Willie Randolph’s thoughts are on Ken Griffey Jr.’s exceptional career.  McCarron also provided some stats for what could’ve been for the slugger.

Griffey has struggled to stay healthy his entire career. He could have played 3,115 games over his career if he had played every game of every season he’s been in the majors, including this one. But he’s only played in 2,414, or 77.5%. He’s missed 701 games, or more than four full seasons. Still, he’s hit 597 homers.

Bobby Valentine has ‘zen’ moment in new movie - Patrick Huguenin found out that three NYU students made a documentary about Bobby Valentine titled, ”The Zen of Bobby V”.  The documentary “examines Valentine’s remarkable adaptation to a baseball culture far from home.”  Bobby V is now the manager of Japan’s Chiba Lotte Marines.  I gotta check out this flick because it seems like it will crack me up.

Saturday’s Mets News: Mets Win 1st With Reds

May 10, 2008 By: Keith Category: Carlos Delgado, Cincinnati Reds, David Wright, Johan Santana, MLB, Matt Wise, NL Central, NL East, New York Mets, Pedro Martinez, Ramon Castro, Raul Casanova, Willie Randolph Comments Off

Carlos BeltranLast night’s game got postponed so the Reds and the Mets are playing a double header today.  The Mets stomped the Reds in the early game, and the night game begins at 7:30 p.m.  Hopefully, we’ll get to witness another whoopin’ tonight.  Mike Pelfrey is supposed to face Bronson Arroyo.  Arroyo used to be the Reds’ ace, but his 1-4 record in ‘08 wouldn’t show us any evidence of that.  Pelfrey started out the year pitching well, but tailed off lately.  If he doesn’t have a good outing, then possibly the offense can put up double digits again.

Mets.com:
