Mets Had to Separate Keith Hernandez and Jose Reyes on Plane

July 04, 2008 By: Keith Category: Jose Reyes, Keith Hernandez, MLB, NL East, New York Mets No Comments →

Even though Jose Reyes is quickly becoming one of the players on the Mets that I want traded immediately, I was going to congratulate him for tying the Mets All-Time triples record that was set by Mookie Wilson.  However, I just came across a really juicy article by the New York Post which made me change my mind.  During the game when Reyes threw his glove up in the air, Keith Hernandez said that the Mets were “babying” Reyes and “He’s got to get over that. Enough babying going on now. He’s a grown man. He’s been around a long enough time. Take off the kid gloves.”  Well, Jose’s friends and relatives told him what Keith said which led to a “very heated” situation on the plane out to St. Louis.  After Reyes confronted Hernadez, Keith said “I was just doing my job - you should do yours.”  Supposedly, they almost were about to exchange punches.  Both Jose and Keith deny that the situation was anything more than a conversation, but other players on the plane said otherwise.

Keith Hernandez

Toe-to-toe, blow-for-blow, round-for-round, I got Keith’s back in this one.  I love his quote, “I was just doing my job - you should do yours.”  Isn’t that the truth.  He’s one of my favorite Mets of All-Time, and he’s a legend in Queens.  He has rings and played the game the way it should be played.  Reyes is like a pimple on Keith’s rear end right now so he’s messing with the wrong cat.  The Mets are babying Jose, and this is just another incident on his part so this is it for me.  I now want him out as much as I want Delgado and Castillo out.  I would only have been impressed by Reyes if he shut the hell up and played like a professional who makes millions of dollars.  He is going backwards instead of forwards, and that shouldn’t happen at 25.  I don’t remember this stuff happening the first three seasons, it’s all since he got benched by Willie.  He has no heart which is why he’s unable to come through in the clutch or listen to people when he’s does wrong.  I would feel much better if he was doing this stuff when he was a rookie and not doing it anymore.  This kid’s heads too damn big.

Father’s Days’ Mets News

June 15, 2008 By: Keith Category: AL West, David Wright, Keith Hernandez, MLB, NL East, New York Mets, Omar Minaya, Texas Rangers, Tom Seaver, Trot Nixon, Wally Backman, Willie Randolph No Comments →

Die Hard Mets Fan would like to wish all of you a Happy Father’s Day.  So the Mets get to play twice on Father’s Day as a result of last night’s rainout.  I guess most of them won’t get to see their families unless they brought them to Shea.  The Mets are getting rocked 8-2 right now in the Top of the 8th.  Maine only gave up 3 runs until he got beat up in the 7th.  Hopefully the second game will be much better than this one.

Mets.com:

Pedro’s return parade rained on - Jon Blau reported that, “Saturday night’s game between the Rangers and Mets was postponed due to rain and will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 1:10 p.m. ET. Tickets for Saturday night’s game will not be honored at either of Sunday’s games, but can be used for any other game during the 2008 season — depending on availability.”

Nixon’s debut to come during twin bill - Marty Noble put together a pregame analysis for both of today’s games between the Rangers and the Mets.

An off-day not on Wright’s mind

Newsday:

Nixon arrives, but role on Mets up in the air

Drug secret helped Mets get Keith Hernandez - Steven Marcus pointed out that on,

The 25th anniversary of the most significant trade in Mets history includes a historic footnote. It might never have occurred if the Mets’ front office knew why the Cardinals were unloading Keith Hernandez.

Years before he became a central piece of the 1986 world champion Mets and gained iconic status in team history, Hernandez abused cocaine, an issue not publicly confirmed until Hernandez and several other players testified in the 1985 Pittsburgh drug trials.

I highly recommend that you read the entire article.

Ex-Met Backman has had one wild ride of late - Ken Davidoff ponders, “As Willie Randolph writhes on the Mets’ skillet, his job in serious jeopardy, it’s interesting to wonder whether Backman would be a candidate to replace him had he made different choices - and whether the Mets should give him a job somewhere in their organization now.”

Minaya’s full autonomy more like fool autonomy - Shaun Powell believes that Omar Minaya doesn’t want to fire Willie Randolph because that’s the manager he hired.  Powell thinks that the Wilpons do want to fire Willie.  Since Omar received full autonomy upon taking over, he would be acting as a puppet if he had to pull the trigger.

Schedule has been brutal to Mets

Randolph hanging on as Mets manager for now - David Lennon and Ken Davidoff wrote, “A person familiar with the situation said late Saturday that Randolph was not likely to be fired on Father’s Day and would be on board the team’s charter to Anaheim, Calif., later Sunday night. But the Mets are still seriously considering a plan to fire Randolph and pitching coach Rick Peterson in a last-ditch effort to revive this underachieving team.”

New York Daily News:

Rangers soak it all in at Shea - Roger Rubin explained that, “Five members of the Rangers starting lineup and a relief pitcher put on a show for Mets fans Saturday night at Shea and also showed New York what a team having fun looks like. After finding out the game had been postponed due to rain - it will be made up as part of a straight doubleheader beginning today at 1 p.m. - they made the drenched tarp on the field their personal Slip ‘N Slide before exiting to chants of “Let’s go Rangers!”  The article contains pictures of the 5 Rangers sliding on the tarp, and it pretty funny.

Mets show interest in Rockies’ Brian Fuentes, but deal not close

New York Post:

NEVER MORE POPULAR, HERNANDEZ IS THE REAL MR. MET

25 BEST MOMENTS AT SHEA: NO. 15 - “The Mets seemed destined for the World Series in 2006 until they were cut down by the underdog Cardinals in the National League Championship Series. The series went to a decisive Game 7 at Shea Stadium, the first Game 7 there since the 1986 World Series.”  That was depressing.  It was like the MC pressed a mute button as soon as Beltran watched the called strike three go over the plate.

SERBY’S SUNDAY Q&A WITH… Tom Seaver.

The Star-Ledger:

The beginning of a long (and potentially longer) day - Colin Stephenson provided the lineup for the first Rangers-Mets game of today’s double header.

Memorial Day’s Mets News

Die Hard Mets Fan would like to wish all of you a Happy Memorial Day.  Well, the good news is that Willie is sticking around…unless you wanted him out.  It could be a whole lot worse.  Most people have assumed that if you bring in a fiery manager then the Mets will win a championship.  But, what if it backfired?

Here’s the probable pitching matchps for the Marlins-Mets series:

  • 05/26/2008 - Ricky Nolasco (3-3) - Mike Pelfrey (2-5)
  • 05/27/2008 - Andrew Miller (4-3) - Johan Santana (5-3)
  • 05/28/2008 - Scott Olsen (4-2) - Oliver Perez (4-3)

After Santana, Mets drafting to restock - Anthony DiComo discusses the MLB Draft.  “This June’s First-Year Player Draft will give the Mets new opportunities to fill in the blanks throughout their farm system, and new chances to replenish the talent that they lost in January’s trade for Santana.”

Mets hoping home cooking helps - Owen Perkins put together a pregame analysis for today’s game between the Marlins and the Mets.

Newsday:

Rockies beat Mets, Willie to meet Wilpons Monday - David Lennon summarized yesterday’s game between the Mets and the Rockies.

Latest gaffes by Mets too much to overcome

Keith Hernandez rips ex-mate Gary Carter on air - After how Gary Carter publicly stated that he was available to coach the Mets, Keith Hernandez had this to say about Carter during the game,

I have great respect for Gary as a player. He’s a Hall of Famer. When Johnny Bench left the game, he was the premier catcher in the National League. But that being said, and I’ve kept quiet for such a long time, but for the people out there listening, just go in the dictionary and look up ‘unconscious’ and you’ll find a picture of Gary Carter. I know that’s strong, but it just happens too many times and it’s just, you’re walking around unconscious.

New York Daily News:

Willie Randolph survives to manage the Mets another day

For Jose Reyes as for Willie Randolph, can it possibly get any worse?

Latest flop by slumping Mets may be Willie Randolph’s last - Adam Rubin also summarized yesterday’s Mets-Rockies game.

Mets mull minors stint for struggling Aaron Heilman - “Aaron Heilman’s struggles may land him in the minors. Mets officials have discussed demoting Heilman and replacing him with Triple-A closer Carlos Muniz, who had three scoreless appearances with the Mets in April, the Daily News has learned.”
