Monday’s Mets News: Opening Day 2008

March 31, 2008 By: Keith Category: Aaron Heilman, Angel Pagan, Billy Wagner, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, David Wright, Florida Marlins, Johan Santana, Jorge Sosa, Jose Reyes, Luis Castillo, MLB, Marlon Anderson, Matt Wise, Mike Pelfrey, NL East, New York Mets, Orlando Hernandez, Ryan Church, Scott Schoeneweis, Willie Randolph Comments Off

David WrightToday is Opening Day for the New York Mets.  The Florida Marlins are hosting the Mets at Dolphin Stadium.  When I was walking my dog, I walked onto the overcross to see Shea Stadium on Opening Day even though the Mets are out of town.  It is the final year at Shea which is somewhat upsetting so I went to catch a glimpse of it.

Mets lineup: Reyes, Castillo, Wright, Beltran, Delgado, Pagan, Church, Schnieder, and Santana.

At the Plate

Meanwhile, the Mets didn’t do much with the bat early on.  Hendrickson was the starting pitcher for the Marlins.  2 Hits and 0 Runs through the first 3 Innings.  In the 4th, Beltran lined a double to the corner in left to lead off the inning.  Hendrickson walked Delgado to put runners on first and second.  Pagan pulled an RBI double over third base to drive in Beltran and Delgado advanced to third.  Church pulled an RBI single through the hole on the right side to drive in Delgado and Pagan advanced to third.  Schneider lined out to first, and Church ran around Jacobs to get back to the bag safely for the first out.  Hendrickson fanned Santana for the second out.  Reyes lined an RBI single to left to score Pagan and advanced Church to second.  Hendrickson walked Castillo to load the bases.  Wright lined a base clearing double into the gap in left to score Church, Reyes, and Castillo.  Beltran lined out to center field to end the inning.  The Mets scored 4 runs on 5 hits in the 4th inning.

In the 6th inning, Nolasco came in in relief.  With 2 outs, Reyes hit a single through the hole on the right side.  With Castillo in the batters box, Reyes got caught stealing second to end the inning.  With one out in the 7th, Wright hit a double to the gap in right center.  With Beltran in the batters box, Wright was thrown out trying to steal third.  Nolasco struggled a little bit in the 8th, but got through it without giving up any runs.

In the 9th inning, Lindstrom came in for the Marlins.  Anderson, pinch hit for Sosa, had a leadoff flair to center over the second baseman’s head.  Reyes dropped a sacrifice bunt to move Anderson to second while the Marlins through out Reyes at first.  Lindstrom threw a wild pitch which allowed Anderson to steal third, and a bad throw to third allowed Anderson to score.  Castillo grounded out.  Lindstrom walked Wright.  Beltran grounded out to second to end the inning.

On the Mound

Johan Santana was on the mound, and he retired 9 straight before walking Ramirez in the 4th inning.  Willingham hit a 2-run shot to score Ramirez and Willingham.  The Marlins put up 2 Runs on 1 Hit in the 4th inning.  After giving up the homer, Santana stuggled a little bit in the 5th but didn’t give up any runs.  Johan went through the 6th in order.  Santana gave up 1 Hits and 0 Runs in the 7th.  Johan pitched 7 Innings giving up 2 Runs, 3 Hits, and 2 Walks while Striking Out 8 in his Mets debut.

In the 8th inning, Wise came in in relief.  Wise struggled in the 8th so Randolph brought Schoeneweis in with runners on first and second.  Schoeneweis gave up a ground ball where the Mets got the out at first, but the runners advanced to second and third.  Willie replaced Schoeneweis with Sosa.  Sosa fanned Willingham to end the 8th without giving up any runs.

In the bottom of the 9th, Randolph put Heilman in.  Heilman struck out the first two batters.  Gonzalez grounded to Heilman, and Heilman made the throw to first for the final out.

Final Score: New York beat Florida 7-2.  The MLB.com Box Score is attached.

Wednesday’s Mets News

March 05, 2008 By: Keith Category: Angel Pagan, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Citi Field, Endy Chavez, Johan Santana, John Maine, John Ricco, Jose Reyes, Jose Valentin, Los Angeles Dodgers, MLB, Matt Wise, Michel Abreu, Moises Alou, NL East, NL West, New York Mets, Orlando Hernandez, Pedro Martinez, Ruben Gotay, Ryan Church, Shea Stadium, Spring Training, Willie Randolph No Comments →

Moises AlouIt seems like a Met a day is getting injured.  The Mets are going to have to place a hospital on Tradition Field and relocate the team Doctors to Port St. Lucie.  Mets are flying back and forth to New York to have MRIs and CT scans performed.  At this rate, just bring everybody down to the Sunshine State.  It also seems like Omar needs to assemble a whole new 2008 team because only Wright and Reyes are healthy.

The best Mets article of the day was “Mets Elect to Not Remember the Maine” by Matthew Artus.  Make sure you give it a read.

Mets.com:

Notes: El Duque unveils new delivery - The Mets need to give Mike Pelfrey the spot in the rotation and use Orlando Hernandez elsewhere.

Pedro gladly passing ace baton - I keep reading these articles about how happy Pedro is to pass the baton to Santana.  It annoys me because Pedro would be the 4th starter if it was based performance rather than what he did in a prior life.  He only started in 5 games last season, and he hasn’t been Pedro since he left the Red Sox.

Johan sharp in second spring start - Anthony DiComo summarized today’s game between the Dodgers and the MetsJohan Santana got the start.  The Mets beat the Dodgers by a score of 3-2.  The Mets are 5-3 in the Grapefruit League standings.

Mets release ‘08 promotional schedule - The Mets will be handing out promotions during 35 home games during 2008.

Alou needs surgery for hernia - Anthony DiComo reported that “Moises Alou learned on Wednesday that he’ll need to undergo surgery for a hernia. The outfielder will be out four to six weeks.”  Alou flew back to New York today to have an MRI performed.  My Mets are dropping like flies.  4-6 weeks…

Valentin fighting to go out on his terms - Anthony DiComo describes the brace on Jose Valentin’s right leg.

Notes: Gotay’s MRI unconvincing - Anthony DiComo had this to say about Ruben Gotay’s CT scan, “A reading of Gotay’s CT scan on Tuesday revealed that an irregularity in his bone turned out to be the residue of a previous injury. Though the team wasn’t completely convinced, sending the scan results to New York for further review, Mets assistant general manager John Ricco remained optimistic.”  DiComo gave provided some other health updates as well:

  • Michel Abreu “strained his right hip flexor running into first base on Monday and is day-to-day.”
  • Carlos Delgado and Ryan Church have been working out in a pool.  Delgado has not set a return date yet.  Church was supposed to return to the field today.
  • Endy Chavez should return on the weekend.

Anthony also noted that Shea Stadium is banning smoking this year in order to get us ready for the rules of Citi Field.

Slider, not deal, a Maine concern - Anthony DiComo discusses that awful contract that the Mets just gave to John Maine.

Newsday:

Mets’ Beltran worried as he recovers from surgery - Carlos Beltran declared the NL East.  You don’t want that guy to be worried about anything going into the season.

Finally, some good news: No broken bone for Gotay

E-mail from Port St. Lucie - David Lennon lets us know how Matt Wise is doing in Spring Training.

New York Daily News:

Moises Alou sidelined until May - Mets.com said 4-6 weeks on Alou which does not go into May.  We’ll have to see how long Moises is really out.

With so many spring injuries, it pains Willie Randolph to think about them - Willie…all of us Mets fans feel the same way.

John Maine’s payoff pitch has to wait - Adam Rubin also goes over Maine’s new contract.  Maine got the league minimum which is currently $450,000.  I believe all of these guys are overpaid, but Maine should be ahead of Perez.

Ruben Gotay may be catching break - Adam Rubin also discusses the injury status of Gotay.

Smoking completely banned from Shea

New York Post:

MAINE STREAM - Bart Hubbuch stated that Maine is alright with his new contract.

BELIEVE IT, OR NOT - Joel Sherman noted that the Mets put a positive spin on Delgado.

AMAZIN’S ARE BACK IN MARKET FOR BACKUPS - Due to all of the injured players, Joel Sherman explains what positions need to be filled by the Mets.

REYES HAS 2K8 COVERED - Bart Hubbuch pointed out that Jose Reyes is on the cover of MLB 2K8.  Supposedly poor performance follows being on the cover of the video game, but Reyes is not concerned about it.

METS GET GOOD NEWS ON GOTAY

New York Times:

Injuries Give Pagán Chance to Make the Mets - Ben Shpigel explains how Angel Pagan is doing in Spring Training.

The Star-Ledger:

Alou out 4-6 weeks

Mets Elect to Not Remember the Maine - Matthew Artus is disgruntled about the contract that the Mets gave to John Maine.

Monday’s Mets News

February 25, 2008 By: Keith Category: AL Central, Angel Pagan, Ben Johnson, Carlos Beltran, Carlos Gomez, Citi Field, Damion Easley, Deolis Guerra, Duaner Sanchez, Endy Chavez, Joe Smith, Johan Santana, John Maine, Jose Reyes, Jose Valentin, Juan Padilla, Kevin Mulvey, Luis Castillo, MLB, Matt Wise, Minnesota Twins, NL East, New York Mets, Omar Minaya, Orlando Hernandez, Phil Humber, Willie Randolph No Comments →

Duaner SanchezI have expressed my concerns regarding the Mets already as we head into ’08.  On of my biggest concerns is this guy, Duaner Sanchez.  I was thrilled to hear that Sanchez was able to pitch today, and he didn’t give up any runs in his first outing since ‘06.  Duaner is the one player that I’m going to zone in on more than any other.  The biggest reason why the Bullpen was so much better in ‘06 then in ‘07 was primarily because of Sanchez not being there.  Bradshaw was also very successful, but Omar let him go so it’s not worth arguing that point.  It is very infrequent when pitchers come back from injuries and pitch as well as they used to.  So what we will get out of Duaner?  Your guess is as good as mine, but I’m looking forward to watching him.  If he can hold down the 8th inning like he used to then the Mets are going to have a great season.

Mets.com:

Smith aims to regain early ‘07 magic - As a Mets fan, I also want Joe Smith to regain that early ‘07 magic.  I’ve read that Smith just ran out of gas in ‘07 so he hopefully he got on a better conditioning play this offseason.

Notes: Santana leaves mark — literally - In batting practice, Carlos Beltran ended up getting hit by one of Johan Santana’s pitches in the tricep.  Beltran said “he got me pretty good.”  Marty Noble was seeking for a story and came up with this, John Maine went on the internet for the first time last week.

Newsday:

Beltran survives Santana fastball, but sidelined - David Lennon also lets you know how Beltran is feeling after getting belted by Santana in BP.  Beltran is a big boy…he’ll tough it out.

SPRING TRAINING: E-MAIL FROM PORT St. LUCIE - David Lennon reported that Santana pitched his second BP yesterday.

SPRING TRAINING: Willie carries message to Reyes’ home - David Lennon tells us about a “14-person Mets contingent that visited Reyes at his parents’ house in a village outside of Santiago” which Willie was part of.  Willie stated that “I went because I wanted to talk to him about his mind-set moving forward. We didn’t get into what happened last year.”  If 14 Mets go to DR to see Reyes then it goes to show you how important Jose is to the team.  Does anybody find it odd that they went to Reyes’ parents house?  Does Jose have his own house in DR?

Randolph in better humor for 2008 - David Lennon pointed out that Willie Randolph is smiling and cracking jokes now.  That’s all good during Spring Training, but Willie needs to crack the whip in ‘08 after the collapse.

New York Daily News:

Duaner Sanchez pitches scoreless inning in Mets’ intrasquad scrimmage - The AP reported that Duaner got to pitch as expected, and he threw a scoreless inning in his return.

John Maine is Mets’ ace in the hole - John Harper raises this question.  How good is John Maine?  Then Harper tried to get the answers to his question.

Duaner Sanchez springs into action - Sanchez was expected to pitch in a game today for the first time since ‘06.

Ex-Mets adjusting to life with Twins - Anthony McCarron lets us know how Carlos Gomez, Philip Humber, Kevin Mulvey, and Deolis Guerra are doing in Twins camp.

Carlos Beltran not ready for spring games - Adam Rubin provided the status of six Mets that will not be ready in time for the start of Spring Training.  These players are Beltran, Castillo, Chavez, Easley, Johnson, and Valentin.  All of them are suffering from leg injuries.  Also, Rubin wrote that El Duque threw his second BP.  Juan Padilla was supposed to pitch today after not pitching since having Tommy John surgery performed in March 2006.  Last, Angel Pagan swept every event to become the best athlete in camp and the first Met to do that.

New York Post:

PLEADING THE 5TH - Bart Hubbuch has the latest and greatest on that final spot in the rotation.

MINAYA’S BRAND OF BASEBALL - Mike Vaccaro lets you know what kind of GM he thinks Omar is.

FROM BELTRAN TO WELT-RAN - Bart Hubbuch also provided the details about Beltran getting belted by Santana.

New York Times:

The Skinny on the Mets’ New Reliever? Great Changeup, Bad Luck - Ben Shpigel tells the story of Matt Wise.

The Star-Ledger:

Citi Field Logo: Thoughts? - Yesterday, Jeremy Cothran was very excited about seeing the Citi Field logo.  He has a picture of it and it is ugly.

Don’t Call It a Comeback - Matthew Artus wrote about the return of Sanchez.

No rush to play ailing players - Jeremy Cothran also covered the injured Mets.

Mets pitcher regains control of his career - Jeremy Cothran also discusses Wise.

Saturday’s Mets News

February 16, 2008 By: Keith Category: Ben Johnson, Brady Clark, Carlos Beltran, David Wright, Johan Santana, Jose Reyes, MLB, Matt Wise, NL East, New York Mets, Orlando Hernandez, Pedro Martinez, Ryan Church, Sandy Alomar Jr., Scott Schoeneweis, Tom Nieto, Willie Randolph Comments Off

I apologize for not writing yesterday, and getting around to it really late today.  I was traveling home from NH yesterday.  I got home fairly late.  This morning, my dog Murphy drank a little bit of the mop bucket that contained ammonia.  Murphy was vomitting all day, and I had to clean all of that up and take care of my pooch.  He seems to be a little better now, but it was a long day.

Mets.com:

Santana ready for what New York brings - We’ll see when he shows up and pitches in New York.

Beltran to Rollins: ‘We’re team to beat’ - When you say stuff like this, you must deliver.  Especially when the Mets are coming off of a year where they already were good enough to win the division, but couldn’t win another game.  It seems like this prediction stuff has worked recently.  Jimmy Rollins called it last year.  Plaxico Burress, of the NY Giants, called it this year.  In years past, predictions were a big no-no.  However, it seems like people are delivering.  So make sure you win the division Mr. Beltran.

Notes: Mets trio recovering from injuries - Anthony DiComo wrote about Mets players that are coming back from injuries.

Randolph looking ahead to new season - Anthony DiComo covered Willie Randolph’s press conference.

Notes: El Duque confident in starting - Anthony DiComo covered multiple topics in this article.

  • Orlando Hernandez plans on starting.
  • Jose Reyes and Ryan Church showed up to Spring Training on Friday.
  • Willie again confirmed that Church is the right fielder unless he really stuggles hitting lefties.
  • Matt Wise wants to make the Postseason and be part of the roster.
  • Sandy Alomar Jr. expressed his desire to become a coach so the Mets named him the Catching Instructor.  Alomar Jr. is replacing Nieto.  Tom Nieto is now going to be the First Base Coach.
  • The Mets also signed Brady Clark to a Minor League contract and invited him to Spring Training.

Who will win the World Series? John Schlegel asked MLB General Managers to predict who will win the World Series.  Schlegel included quotes and graphs to provide the results.

Pedro, Johan get things started - Marty Noble talks about the Mets’ pair of aces, Santana and Martinez.

Notes: Schoeneweis clears the air - According to Marty Noble,

Scott Schoeneweis cleared the air on Thursday about his misidentified involvement with steroids.

Schoeneweis had met with people from the Commissioner’s Office in December to discuss an ESPN report alleging he had violated the collective bargaining agreement by using steroids. The office determined it had insufficient evidence of a violation to warrant discipline.

Schoeneweis said the Mets and other clubs he had played for were aware of his use, which was tied to his treatment of testicular cancer.

“I was just trying to get to normal, not above normal. It’s all well-documented,” Schoeneweis said.

At the end of the article, Noble pointed out that the Mets ended up signing Ben Johnson to a Minor League contract and invited him to Spring Training.

RANDOLPH READY TO GO

SCHOENEWEIS: I’M NOT LIKE OTHER STEROID USERS - Scott Schoeneweis claims that he had testicular cancer and was prescribed to take steroids.  I have known children and teenagers that have been prescribed steroids to recover from certain illnesses.  I know that takes place in the real world, but I’ve never heard that MLB allows steroids for any reason.  If not then these guys need to get healthy on their own time.  If they recover and can get back in the game then good for them.  If not then so be it.

IT’S NO SMALL WONDER HIS NAME IS STILL CLEAN - Pedro continues to brag about doing his job…pitching without using steroids.

PETITE PEDRO HAS BODY OF EVIDENCE - Bart Hubbuch says that Pedro feels great and he’s happy to have Santana.
