Dick Jauron Still Has a Job?

December 15, 2008 By: BuffBillsFan Category: AFC East, Buffalo Bills, Dick Jauron, NFL No Comments →

Here is an interesting report coming from WGR550.com’s

With 7 losses in 8 games, Bills Coach Dick Jauron was asked after today’s practice whether he has received any assurances from management about being in Buffalo next year.
“Well we haven’t really talked about it. In that regard, I suppose none and in that regard, no indication that I won’t be.”

Jauron again refused to comment about reports that he signed a contract extension with the team. He did say that he anticipates being here next year but when asked if he wouldn’t “deny” signing an extension Jauron said, “I’m not saying anything about it.”

His rationale behind not commenting on his contract status was as follows:
“Well, I’m not the one. It would be irresponsible for me to comment on that. It’s not my place to respond on that.”

Jauron again took the blame for the questionable play call Sunday that led to a J.P. Losman fumble with 2 minutes left, allowing the Jets to beat Buffalo.
“Anytime it doesn’t work you have second thoughts. It was my call. The outcome of it shows that it was not the right call at the right time. I don’t think it is the wrong call if it works.”

The Bills are officially eliminated from playoff contention. Jauron did not rule out giving third-string quarterback Jibran Hamdan a chance to play against Denver this coming Sunday.
“It’ll take a little bit of time the next couple of days. As we get ready for Denver, we’ll talk things over and see.”
Trent Edwards will be re-evaluated throughout the week.

Hardy Out for Year

December 15, 2008 By: BuffBillsFan Category: AFC East, Buffalo Bills, James Hardy, Lee Evans, NFL, Steve Johnson No Comments →

Bills 2nd pick, WR James Hardy, is out for the year after tearing his ACL in Sunday’s loss to the Jets, according to WGR’s Dan Hager who is out at One Bills Drive. He requires surgery and his status for next year is unknown.

He is already being labeled as a bust seeing as he couldn’t even learn the Bills playbook.  It will give rookie Steven Johnson a chance to play more, and he has look pretty good in his limited snaps.

Hardy’s 4 catches this year will not be missed.  He was a non-factor in almost every game this year.

Once again, the Bills are going to have to look for a WR to play opposite Lee Evans that will actually draw attention away from him.

The Giants were unable to overcome the Cowboys defense who kept on knocking around Eli Manning and prevented the Giants from clinching a First Round Bye by handing Big Blue their third loss of the 2008 Regular Season.

1st Quarter

DeMarcus Ware sacked Eli Manning and forced the ball out of his hands on the first play of the Giants’ opening drive, but it was recovered by Rich Seubert after the Giants lost 9 yards.  The drive ultimately led to a punt.

Romo hit Owens over the middle for 25 yards to get into Giants’ territory.  A couple of plays later, Tony Romo got sacked by Renaldo Wynn for a 6-yard loss and by Jay Alford on the next down for a 7-yard loss which forced the Cowboys to punt (Note: Tony Romo’s status changed to Questionable after taking a beating by the Giants during the 1st Quarter).

2nd Quarter

Eli Manning got sacked by Bradie James on the first play of the 2nd Quarter for a loss of 7 yards on a drive which ultimately led to a punt.

Mathias Kiwanuka sacked Tony Romo for a 4-yard loss on the first play of the Cowboys’ drive which began at the 32 yardline with 13:20 remaining.  Choice had a 22-yard catch-and-run on the very next play to overcome the loss of yardage and move the Cowboys into Giants’ territory.  Tony Romo rolled to the right and aired out a 30-yard Touch Down pass to Patrick Crayton giving the Cowboys a 7-0 lead with 11:11 remaining.

Manning opened up the aerial attack on the Cowboys to get the offense rolling.  From shotgun, Eli Manning got sacked by DeMarcus Ware with 6:18 remaining for a loss of 3 yards before the Giants got stopped at the 15 yardline.  John Carney made a 34-yard Field Goal Attempt with 4:52 remaining which cut the Cowboys lead to 7-3.

On 3rd and 11, Greg Ellis sacked Eli Manning for a loss of 8 yards with 1:52 remaining which forced the Giants to punt.

3rd Quarter

During the opening drive of the 3rd Quarter, Eli Manning threw an interception right into the hands of Terence Newman who got tackled immediately without a return at the 36 yardline with 12:13 remaining.

On 2nd and 8, Eli Manning dropped back and got sacked by Anthony Spencer and Jay Ratliff for a 5-yard loss 7:44 remaining.  On 3rd and 13, Eli Manning from shotgun got sacked by Greg Ellis with 7:07 remaining for a loss of 6 yards which led to a punt.

On 3rd and 10, Eli Manning scrambled and got sacked by Greg Ellis and Chris Canty for a 2-yard loss with 3:09 remaining which forced the Giants to punt.

4th Quarter

The Cowboys assembled a 72-yard scoring drive where Romo hooked up with Austin for 23 yards, and Choice had a 22-yard run which got the Cowboys deep into Giants’ territory.  Tony Romo capped it off by throwing a 1-yard Touch Down pass to Deon Anderson who was wide open in the left side of the end zone giving the Cowboys a 14-3 lead with 12:13 remaining.

On 3rd and 12 at the Cowboys’ 6 yardline, Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka sacked Tony Romo in the end zone for a Safety cutting the lead to 14-5 with 7:06 remaining.

The Giants took over at their own 40 yardline, and Manning worked the no huddle offense before getting stopped at the 29 yardline.  John Carney connected on a 47-yard Field Goal Attempt with 5:48 remaining cutting into the Cowboys lead 14-8.

Romo led the Cowboys on a 66-yard scoring drive, and Tashard Choice ran up the middle untouched for a 38-yard Touch Down run with 2:24 remaining.  Romo threw the 2-Point Conversion out of bounds so the Cowboys lead is 20-8 rather than 21-8.

Began at 21 yardline.  DeMarcus Ware sacked Eli Manning and forced the ball out of his hands, but it was recovered by Kevin Boothe after losing 6 yards with 1:48 remaining.  On the final attempt of a hail mary, Eli Manning threw an interception to Terence Newman who caught it and got tackled immediately at the 10 yardline with 0:07 remaining.

The Cowboys went into victory formation and ran out the clock.

Wrap Up

Eli Manning went 18/35 and threw for 191 yards, 0 TDs, and 2 INTs.

Derrick Ward led in Rushing Attempts and in Rushing Yards with 14 and 64 respectively.

Domenik Hixon led in Receptions and Receiving Yards with 6 and 60 respectively.

John Carney went 2/2 in Field Goal Attempts.

Michael Johnson led the team in Tackles with 5.

Mathias Kiwanuka led the team with 1.5 Sacks, Jay Alford and Renaldo Wynn had 1 Sack, and Justin Tuck had 0.5 Sack.

Mathias Kiwanuka had 1 Forced Fumble.

The Buffalo Bills are out of the playoff race but take on a team, the New York Jets, who are struggling themselves this afternoon.

Broadcast Info:

Game:  Buffalo Bills (6-7) @ New York Jets (8-5)
TV: CBS (Greg Gumbel, Dan Dierdorf)

Radio: 97 Rock (Buffalo), 103.3 The EDGE (Buffalo), WHAM 1180 AM (Rochester), WNSS 1260 AM (Syracuse), FAN 590 AM (Toronto). Broadcasts are all done by John Murphy, Mark Kelso and Paul Peck on the Bills radio network.
Time: 1:00 p.m. ET

Game Notes:

  • Last meeting:  In Week 9, Abram Elam’s 92-yard interception return for a touchdown gave the Jets a lead they would not relinquish in a 26-17 road win over the Bills.
  • The Bills have won three of the last four meeting with the Jets, and lead the overall series, 54-42.
  • Following a three-game stretch in November in which Brett Favre threw five touchdowns and led the Jets to 115 total points, he and the Jets have struggled to get into the end zone the last two games. The Jets managed just 17 and 14 points against the soft defenses of the Broncos and 49ers and Favre did not throw a single touchdown pass in that time.
  • Linebacker David Harris, the Jets’ leading tackler from last season, returned to action last week after missing five games with a groin injury. Harris stepped right back into his role, leading the Jets with a season-high 13 tackles. Expect more of the same from New York’s most consistent defender this week.
  • With players such as DB Darrelle Revis and S Kerry Rhodes, New York’s secondary boasts some talented players, yet only one team, Seattle, has been worse in pass coverage this season. The Jets have given up 293.8 passing yards per game over their last four games and this week will face Buffalo’s big-play wideout Lee Evans. Evans has averaged 114.5 yards and a touchdown over his last two games vs. the Jets.
  • The Jets are in a three-way tie for the AFC East lead.
  • The Bills are in last place in the AFC East.
  • Bills TE Robert Royal has career-highs in receptions (29) and receiving yards (308) in 2008.
  • The Jets have won three of their last four at home.
  • Jets RB Thomas Jones leads the AFC with 1,144 rushing yards. Jones needs one rushing touchdown to surpass Curtis Martin for the most rushing touchdowns in a single season in franchise history.

Injury Report:

Bills- Out of Game: CB Jabari Greer (knee) and DE Aaron Schobel (foot).  Doubtful: QB Trent Edwards (groin).  Questionable: CB Dustin Fox (groin).  Probable: WR Josh Reed (back) and DT Marcus Stroud (hip).

Jets- Doubtful: WR Brad Smith (head).  Questionable: LB Eric Barton (knee), CB Ahmad Carroll (foot), WR Laveranues Coles (thigh), LB David Harris (groin), DT Kris Jenkins (hip) and LB Bryan Thomas.  Probable: WR Jerricho Cotchery (shoulder), CB James Ihedigbo (neck) and LB Jason Trusnik (knee).

Quote of the Week:

“It is a team and as a team you all haven’t seen me in this situation talking to you guys so you all haven’t got to hear my piece. So I’m going to speak my piece for the run game. You can blame it on whoever you want to blame it on, but if you are looking for the right person to blame it on I’m right here.”

Ladouceur (Neck), NT Jay Ratliff (Concussion), TE Jason Witten (Ankle), DE DeMarcus Ware (Knee).

Quote of the week:

“Steve has made plays for us. We move him around, put him in different spots, but he is doing a great job of catching the ball underneath and making some runs down the field and we put him in the slot and against Arizona he caught a go-route down the sidelines. He moves around and he can do a lot of different things for us.”- QB Eli Manning on how well WR Steve Smith has played this season

The Buffalo Bills Will Beat the New York Jets in Week 15

December 13, 2008 By: BuffBillsFan Category: AFC East, Buffalo Bills, J.P. Losman, Josh Reed, Lee Evans, NFL, Terrence McGee No Comments →

NOTE: The rest of the NFL Picks for Week 15 will be posted tomorrow.  Sorry for an inconvenience.

Call me nuts, call me crazy, even call me a huge homer, but I am hear to tell you that the Buffalo Bills will beat the New York Jets on Sunday afternoon in the Meadowlands.

I know that this is the point of reading through the first few lines of an article, that you the reader decides to commit to it and finish reading, or you start moving your mouse to the “X” button in the top right of the screen.  Please, before you hit that “X”, let me explain.

I know what all of you are thinking out there, “This guy has lost it” or “What a homer!” or even “You a %#*&@!” but I am serious with the statement I have made above.

Now I will explain how this upset will happen…

J.P. Losman Will Have a Breakout Day

For starters, the Buffalo Bills have quarterback J.P. Losman taking the snaps this weekend for the second game in a row.

Last weekend against the Miami Dolphins, Losman was terrible going 13 of 27 for 123 yards and an interception.  This week however he is coming off two full weeks of practice as the starter and now has dusted that rust off, which ailed him against the ‘Fins.

Now this is the part of the article, that if you are still even reading, you look at what you just read and say, “Wow, he really is a %^#@!.”  I know how it may sound; saying that J.P. Losman is going to have a breakout game but that is what is going to happen.

He will be getting a little help from the Jets defense too.

The Jets are currently ranked fifth in the league with 35 sacks to their credit; but the pass rush of New York hasn’t done much recently.

After going two consecutive weeks without registering a single sack, the Jets recorded two in a loss to the San Francisco 49ers this past weekend.  Two sacks in three games is not very good for a defensive line.

To keep the sacks down in this game, the Bills will want to look at what Broncos QB Jay Cutler did to the Jets two weeks ago.  Cutler rolled out to his right a lot during the game and he was barely pressured.

We all know up here in Buffalo, that JP doesn’t exactly have the greatest pocket awareness and might even hold on to the football too long every now and then, but the Bills have to get him rolling out on passing plays.

Not only will it keep the sacks down and let JP see the field better, it will also give an agile quarterback like Losman, the option to also pick up yards using his legs.

Not only is a poor pass rushing line the problem with the Jets defense, but it seems as if they can’t stop anyone passing the ball now-a-days.

49ers QB Shaun Hill came in last week and looked like the second coming of Joe Montana for that squad, throwing for 285 yards and 2 touchdowns.  He completed passes to 10 different players!

Cutler also had himself a ball game, throwing for over 350 yards and throwing two touchdown passes of his own.

The biggest reason for this is the lack of coverage in the Jets secondary.  Coming into this weekend’s game, the Jets are letting quarterbacks come in and throw for 251.2 yards per game, which is second last in the entire National Football League.  To put that into context, the only other team behind them in terms of passing defense is the 2-11 Seattle Seahawks.

The Jets have also averaged giving up 293.8 passing yards per game over their last four games.

Look for Bills wide receiver, Lee Evans (913 yards, 3 TDs, 70.2 yards per game) to be open deep down the field most of the game.  Josh Reed (41 receptions, 454 yards, 1 TD) will continue to do what he does best, finding holes in the defensive zones and picking up first downs.

Also something you can’t ignore is the success that Losman has already had against the New York Jets in his career, posting a career passer rating of 111.1 against the across the state team.

Pounding the Ball with Marshawn Lynch will be Effective (And is a Must)

On paper the Jets running defense looks unbreakable.  They come into Sunday’s game with the 4th best unit, only letting up 83.5 yards per game and they have only allowed one, 100 yard rusher this season.

They haven’t look too sharp in the last couple weeks though.

Two weeks ago they were ran all over by Peyton Hillis, the rookie out of Arkansas, who went for 129 yards on 22 carries (5.86 yards a carry) and 1 touchdown.  Last week they faced Frank Gore who had 52 yards on 14 carries before he left with an injury, right as he was starting to heat up.

This week, Lynch spoke for the first time with the Buffalo media, blaming himself for the Bills lack of a rushing attack.  Do you think he will come out fired up?

The coaches have to come out and pound the football with Lynch.

They also received some good news with Jets nose tackle, Kris Jenkins being limited in practice all week due to a hip injury.

Though Jenkins is still expected to give it a go on Sunday, his number of snaps could be reduced due to the injury.  The Bills goal should be to tire him out and make him leave the game early.  You can accomplish that with riding on the shoulders of Marshawn Lynch.  The Bills realize they need to win the time of possession battle.

Look for Lynch to get close to 100 yards in this one and a touchdown.  When the Bills need to hold onto the football in the end of the game, look for them to turn to their feature back.

Bills Defense Clutch on 3rd Downs and in the Red Zone

The Jets are not only struggling on the defensive side of the ball, but they can’t convert on 3rd downs, which plays into the Bills favor.

In the last two games, New York has converted just 4 of 21 attempts which is good for a 19% conversion rate.

On the other side of the football, the Bills as a unit have done a much better job of getting the other team’s offense off the field.  Currently, the Bills are ranked ninth in the league in 3rd down defense.  Even with the loss last week, the Bills found a way to stop the Dolphins on third down, holding them to convert on just three of 13 chances (30%).

Also, in the red zone, the Jets are a team right in the middle of the pack in terms of scoring, while it seems (at least sometimes) that the Bills only play defense inside the red zone (the players must be using Old Spice).

Despite their struggles overall, the Bills rank forth in the league in red zone defense, holding opposing teams to a touchdown of percentage of under 43 percent.

They have allowed just 18 touchdowns this season inside the red zone on 42 opportunities!

The bend but don’t break defense works here for Buffalo, as they hold opponents to a ton of field goal attempts (most of which they make, but hey, letting up three is better than getting beat for seven).

BILLS QUESTION MARKS

  • Can the Bills stop 1,000 yard rusher Thomas Jones and keep him out of the end zone?

The Bills are 17th in the NFL, letting up a little over 110 yards a game on the ground per game.  Stopping Jones is going to be a big priority in this one.  Expect for Jones to reach the end zone at least once and get close to the 100 yard mark.  Whether he passes it or not is up to the Bills defense.

  • Can Buffalo stop rookie sensation, Dustin Keller?

The Bills will be playing a lot of zone in this game, like they do every week but eventually someone is going to have to cover Keller one on one.  In zone, Keller will get open over the middle, where he is certainly not afraid to go.  The role of stopping him will fall on safeties Donte Whitner and Bryan Scott.  Both guys have gone up against some of the best in Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates this season.  In the last meeting between these two teams, Keller was kept in check, having only two catches for 19 yards.

  • Will Brett Favre be “back”?

The Bills are going against a future hall of famer in Favre, but he has struggled in the past few outings.  The Jets managed just 17 and 14 points the past two games against the soft defenses of Denver and San Francisco.  Favre did not throw a single touchdown pass during that two game span.  Coming into this game, the Bills have the 11th best pass defense (203.1 yards per game) while also only allowing 21.2 points per game (13th).  The last time these two teams met, Favre had 201 yards, and one interception.

PREDICTION: Bills win a close one, 21-17 against a falling New York Jets team.  The real surprise of this game will be the Bills defense and the play of J.P. Losman.

Ralph Wilson is #1 Problem in Buffalo

December 09, 2008 By: BuffBillsFan Category: AFC East, Buffalo Bills, NFL No Comments →

The Buffalo Bills dropped another embarrassing loss in front of a “home” crowd in Toronto against their AFC East rival, the Miami Dolphins, by a final score of 16-3.

Many fans, including myself, have seen enough of this disgrace on the field and want change. Head Coach Dick Jauron and Offensive Coordinator Turk Schonert are currently on the top of the totem pole but after the game on Sunday I realized something important, this team will not change as long as Ralph Wilson Jr. is in charge.

After the game, Buffalo News columnist Jerry Sullivan was able to talk one on one with Bills owner, Ralph Wilson and here are some of the quotes taken from what is suppose to be an owner who cares about winning:

“Were you embarrassed by this performance today? No, no. I’m getting used to that,” Wilson said with a laugh.

You’ve scored three points two weeks in a row. It’s a long way from the 5-1 record that you had at the start of the season. “At 5-1, we got a lot of turnovers,” he said. “But we just don’t have the talent.”

What about the head coach? “What about him? He can’t kick field goals or tackle during a game. Let’s see, what else is there? Block. Tackle.”

So you’re not saying whether he has an extension or not (referring to Jauron)? “No.” It would be nice to know. Dick Jauron is not very popular right now. “Neither am I,” Wilson said, chortling again. “We’ll go out together.”

Are you kidding me?

I have never liked guys like Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys, who stand on the sidelines and calling out players because I never really thought that was his place.

Boy was I wrong. What I would do for an owner that actually cared whether his team won or lost a game and actually held people responsible for critical mistakes, like taking a 5-1 team that is now sitting at 6-7 for example. Would anyone be on the staff right now if this happened with another team?

Now do I expect the Bills to spend like the ‘Boys? No of course not. They are two teams with two different budgets in two completely different markets. BUT, when you sign a deal that will bring the Bills $78 million for playing games away from home, you would think that money would go towards player contracts.

Nope, not with Ralph. The money just goes into his back pocket but he will still complain that Buffalo sucks and he can’t charge more for ticket prices.

Even if Dick Jauron does get the boot at the end of this season, who are the Bills going to get? Since the great Marv Levy left after the 1997 season, the Bills have gone through Wade Phillips (promoted from within), Gregg Williams, Mike Mularkey, and now Dick Jauron and none of them have done much while with the team or since (Writer’s Note: Please Dallas fans do not say Phillips is a good coach. He inherited a Bill Parcells team and hasn’t done much with it. Still no playoff wins and now the Cowboys might even miss the playoffs this season altogether. As for Bills fans who disagree with Phillips being terrible, he benched Rob Johnson for Doug Flutie. Enough said right there.).

Wilson will not have a big coach brought in. He will look for a coordinator who he can underpay to get him to be a head coach. Maybe it will work out this time, but with teams with first year coaches like Mike Smith of Atlanta, John Harbaugh of Baltimore, Jim Zorn of Washington and Tony Sparano of Miami all having success, it just shows the Bills don’t know how to pick the right one.

The Bills also have a marketing whiz in as a GM. Russ Brandon can sure sell tickets and help create deals to make money for his boss but he is no where near in the right spot to be in a NFL GM role. If Ralph cared about winning, he would bring in someone who actually knew the game of football. Hell, I would make a better GM than Brandon.

You want proof? Instead of bringing in a wide receiver to give Trent Edwards a target to throw to, they put all their money, correction very little, on James Hardy, a 2nd round pick who barely sees the playing field.

I’ll give him credit for going after Tony Gonzalez but hey I give Tony credit too for realizing what us optimistic Bills fans couldn’t see, a terrible team that was nowhere close to being a contender, much less a playoff team.

If the Bills want to actually win some games, Ralph is going to have to find a good coach who can fire up this team a little bit and keep them focused so they don’t go on losing skids. The Bills also need a knowledgeable football person upstairs in the GM role. Look what someone like Parcells did in under 1 season with the Dolphins. The Bills could turn around just as quick if someone upstairs realized what the Bills need and actually did something about it.

Lastly, the Bills need an owner who cares about winning. Hey Ralph, that doesn’t involve spending any money at all to fix. If you have a guy who doesn’t care and just laughs it off after terrible losses, what kind of message does that send to your team?

It’s time for Ralph to commit to winning. Hiring terrible coaches, GMs and not spending money that you have will keep you behind the rest of the NFL until you turn things around.

Sorry Ralph but no one is laughing with you on this one, you are just laughing at yourself.
