PostGame Thoughts: Redskins 23, Eagles 17

LB Rocky Mcintosh layin the smack down on RB Brian Westbrook.Man oh man…where on Earth do I start?!  I think first and foremost… the Redskins deserve a HUGE pat on the back. Number one, they are officially finished playing their division rivals on the road for the season with an NFC East record of 3-1.  Number two, I was watching Chris Bermman on ESPN’s The Blitz yesterday and he was literally tongue tied and pretty much speechless because he, like all NFL analysts at this point, are in disbelief in terms of the Redskins success.  This team is truly a force to be reckoned with.

I believe I speak for the majority of us when I say the opening of the game was a bit nerve wrecking.  Brian Westbrook scored running up the middle at the beginning of the game, followed by rookie DeSean Jackson’s kickoff return for a touchdown (that block in the back 100% should have been accepted by the way), leaving us at a 14 point defecit with 7:47 left to go in the first quarter!  The play by play guys started saying we looked like the Redskins who lost in our first game versus the Giants. Little did they know.

Second quarter was the Shaun Suisham show, where he kicked for  41, 48 and 50 yard field goals which took us into half time down by 5, score 14-9.  And this Redskins defense came out ready to fight in the third quarter, causing Donovan Mcnabb and his Eagles to go 3-and-out three times in a row, and going nearly 30 minutes without a first down.

Meanwhile on the other side of the ball, the Redskins were being productive as well.  College quarterback turned receiver, Anwaan Randle El threw TE Chris Cooley his first touchdown of the year, giving Washington the lead, 16-14.  At the start of the fourth quarter, RB Clinton Portis literally walked into the end zone, adding to the lead and the Redskins 23 unanswered points since Jackson’s kickoff returned TD halfway through the first quarter.

The Eagles marched down the field and made it to the 2 yard line, but then Brian Westbrook took a loss of 3 yards and Acker’s had to come in to kick a field goal.   Washington went on to get the W with the final score being 23-17.

So…how come this number one defense against the rush decided not to show up yesterday? Because Clinton Portis AND Ladell Betts got their man yesterday with 200+ yards!! Not to mention Jason Campbell and the Redskins converted on third down 11 of 19 attempts.  He adapted to reading the blitz effectively and our offensive line gave the Eagles a run for their money. And how about Brian Westbrook..? He had just 33 yards on the ground, granted he got the TD early, but where was he at after that?

As opposed to my initial thoughts at the beginning of the game, our Skins have really broken out of their shell. And as if the defeat of the Cowboys last week wasn’t reason enough, we are certainly the talk among the league right now. We’re the only team in the league who has yet to have an offensive turnover for goodness sake!! Sure, the Giants remain undefeated, but who the heck have they really played so far? And there are a couple of teams with only one loss…most of which I would say deserve to be 4-1 or 3-1. But I am a firm believer that we’ve had the toughest schedule.  But that being said, we are now going into the easiest part of the season, facing the Rams, Browns and Lions who are 1-11 respectively.  Our biggest challenge at the time, in my opinion, would be to NOT get cocky and prepare for these games the same we have thus far.

Oh yeah, and wait, how on EARTH are the Tennessee Titans really 5-0 right now? That’s the best record in the league!! What’s going on?!

week 5= the week of proof

Okay…so we’re a quarter of the way through the season going into this week, folks.  Notably, the Redskins opened the season in an ugly way versus the Super Bowl Champs.  However, I think the more important factor in our 3-1 record would be our win over the undefeated Cowboys last week. IN DALLAS! So considering we’re in second place in the division right now, we’re in a good position going into Philadelphia to take on another NFC East rival.

Week 5 is critical for us here, on more notes than one.  First of all, lets take a peep at last season real quick. In a quick glimpse, the Skins barely beat the Dolphins, the worst team in the NFL to open the season. Next, they beat a shaky looking Eagles squad and then lost to the Giants going into their bye week. After the bye, they crushed the Lions in week 5…but that game was followed by an eight game stretch where we only won 2 games.

This caught my attention because we went into the second quarter of the season last year having only been beaten by the Giants.  Sound familiar?  Granted, last years Giants squad was 0-2 by the time they came to town… but the slow start wasn’t bad enough to keep them from winning the super bowl! In the last year, the Redskins have been through a lot as a team.  But considering we have the same record we did then before hell broke loose, it’s just a little bit nerve wrecking.

To start the 2008 season, Washington played all three of their division rivals AWAY in their first five games. That’s pretty friggin’ tough, especially as a contender in the NFC East. After the Eagles, we get the simplest part of our schedule with the Rams and Browns at home and then heading to Detroit.  We’ll host the Steelers at home for Monday night football and then we get a breather with our bye at week 10.  And our boys are gonna need that rest to prepare for the Cowboys, Seahawks and Eagles immediately after. FUN!

We’ve got the talent.  We’ve got the coaches.  We’ve got the ambition.  With a few exceptions, we’ve even got a good amount of experience under our belts now too! Now the Redskins just have to go out and prove to the rest of the world what WE, as fans, already know.  That this team hasn’t just gotten lucky and we CAN make it to the playoffs…and not necessarily just as a Wild Card.  It’s been a funny year so far in the NFL and week 5 is generally when you start to see the good teams pull away from the rest. Hopefully we make that happen and become 3-1 in the division. This season, we’re not a fluke. This is the real deal and we prove it more and more every week.

Oh yeah, and just for kicks… by week five last season, guess who was sitting at the bottom of the division?  the E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!!!! coincidence? I think not.

Ready, or Not…

September 01, 2008 By: Warmontco Category: Redskins, Roster, Washington Redskins No Comments →

The season kicks off this Thursday, September 4th at 7PM EST. As they say, it’s time to either step up, or step back.

It’s not a secret that the Skins have not looked good over the last two preseason games. Chris Cooley stated on his blog that we, the fans, will see an entirely different team with a real, competitive attitude come this Thursday. Moreover, he’s quoted on the Skins website of saying, “Season openers set the real standard for your team.” I couldn’t have said it better.

So, at the end of the game on Thursday, what will we know? Will we know if Jason Campbell is for real, and can once again learn a new offense? Will we learn that our three functional WR’s will be up to the task? Will we learn that our TE’s are more than capable of stepping up in place of our WR’s? Will we learn that Clinton Portis is worthy of the stats he is putting up relative to other Redskins backs of the past? And, most importantly, will we learn if Jim Zorn can lead from the front, as well as from the ear of the QB?

Here is the starting line-up that will provide us with the answers we seek:

RCB - 22; Carlos Rogers*(Hmmm…Personally, I prefer Smooty)

SS - 37; Reed Doughty (It’s unfair, but he still has enormous shoes to fill…size 21 to be exact)

FS - 30; LaRon Landry

SPECIAL TEAMS

Speaking of Clinton Portis, here are some quick facts from the team:

Among active players, the seventh-year pro from Miami ranks seventh in career rushing with 7,715 yards and third in rushing touchdowns with 63.

His 91.8 rushing yards per game is second among active players, trailing only LaDainian Tomlinson’s 95.9-yard average.

Portis has compiled 4,616 rushing yards for the Redskins, which ranks fourth all-time in franchise history.

With 1,260 rushing yards in 2008, Portis would pass Stephen Davis and Larry Brown to move into second place in Redskins history in that category.

With 11 rushing touchdowns, Portis would move ahead of Brown and Terry Allen and tie Davis for second place all-time in club history.
