Friday’s Mets News: Subway Series

May 16, 2008 By: Keith Category: AL East, Billy Wagner, Johan Santana, Jose Reyes, Luis Castillo, MLB, NL, NL East, New York Mets, New York Yankees, SNY, Shea Stadium, Washington Nationals, Willie Randolph Comments Off

Subway SeriesThe 2008 Subway Series will begin tonight, if it stops raining.  And man is it raining.  Tonight’s game will probably get postponed.  If you’ve followed what I’ve written then you’d know that I think the Subway Series is overhyped Interleague play.  I’m not a fan of Interleague games at all.  It wouldn’t bother me if they eliminated it from the schedule.  If they did it at all, I think that it would be better if they did it like the NFL where each NL division plays a specific AL division per year and then it alternates annually.  That way, each division plays the same opponents.  For instance, if the NL East played the AL East in 2008, then if the NL East played AL Central in 2009, and so on.  It seems like the Interleague play goes on forever.  Or is it that the MLB season goes on forever?  I don’t know.  And then there is the difference in rules which is the dumbest thing in sports.  That doesn’t happen in the NFL, NBA, or the NHL.  The difference in rules is buch league.  Anyway, here’s the probable pitching matchups for the weekend:

  • 04/16/2008 - Johan Santana (4-2) - Darrell Rasner (2-0)
  • 04/17/2008 - Oliver Perez (3-3) - Andy Pettitte (3-4)
  • 04/18/2008 - John Maine (5-2) - Chien-Ming Wang (6-1)

Thursday’s Mets News: Mets Fall to Nats

May 15, 2008 By: Keith Category: AL East, Aaron Heilman, Claudio Vargas, Johan Santana, Luis Castillo, MLB, Moises Alou, NL East, New York Mets, New York Yankees, Pedro Martinez, Scott Schoeneweis, Washington Nationals Comments Off

If you remember how I was bitching yesterday that Santana shouldn’t have been held back a day to face the Yankees because the division is more important then listen to what I’m pissed off about now.  That was before last night’s game and today’s game.  How good of a game did Vargas pitch last night?  He pitched 6.1 Innings allowing 3 Hits and 2 Runs.  Pretend that was Johan’s line, and then Heilman came in and gave up 4 Runs while only recording one out.  Or better yet, how great was Pelfrey today?  He pitched 7.2 Innings allowing 3 Hits and 1 Run.  The Bullpen subsequently came in and put up zeroes.  Santana was suppposed to pitch today so pretend that he pitched as great as Pelfrey did.  The problem is that the Mets wouldn’t have won either game because the offense sucks.

The only thing the Mets did differently today is mess up that w-l-w-l-w-l thing.  Now, they lost two in a row to the last place Nats…and at home to boot.  The Mets lost the series 3 games to 1, and the Mets finished the homestand with a 3-4 record against the Reds and the Nationals.  It’s kind of pathetic.

At the Plate

Jason Bergmann (0-1) was the starting pitcher for the Nationals.  In the Bottom of the 1st, Castillo beat out a bunt towards the pitcher for a one-out single.  Wright flied out to right.  Beltran flied out to center.  Bergmann gave up 1 Hit, 0 Runs, 0 BBs, and he had 0 SOs in the 1st Inning.  In the Bottom of the 2nd, Church drew a leadoff walk.  Bergmann fanned Delgado.  Castro lined out to left.  Anderson flied out to right to end the inning.  Bergmann gave up 0 Hits, 0 Runs, 1 BB, and he had 1 SO in the 2nd Inning.  In the Bottom of the 3rd, Castillo dropped a two-out single into shallow right as Kearns dove but could not get full control of the ball.  Wright hit a fly ball along the right field line which Kearns (Error on Austin Kearns) dropped so Wright ended up with a two-out single, and Castillo went first to third.  Beltran lined out to right to end the inning with runners on the corners.  Bergmann gave up 1 Hit, 0 Runs, 0 BBs, and he had 1 SO in the 3rd Inning.  In the Bottom of the 4th, Bergmann pitched a 1-2-3 inning.  Bergmann gave up 0 Hits, 0 Runs, 0 BBs, and he had 1 SO in the 4th Inning.  In the Bottom of the 5th, Anderson lined a leadoff single into center.  Bergmann struck out Pelfrey on three straight pitches.  Bergmann fanned Reyes.  With Castillo in the batters box, Anderson stole second.  Castillo drew a two-out walk.  Wright popped up to shallow left, and Guzman made the catch to leave two Mets stranded.  Bergmann gave up 1 Hit, 0 Runs, 1 BB, and he had 2 SOs in the 5th Inning.  In the Bottom of the 6th, Bergmann retired the side in order.  Bergmann gave up 0 Hits, 0 Runs, 0 BBs, and he had 1 SO in the 6th Inning.  In the Bottom of the 7th, Bergmann struck out the side.  Bergmann gave up 0 Hits, 0 Runs, 0 BBs, and he had 3 SOs in the 7th Inning.  Bergmann left the game after pitching 7.0 Innings allowing 3 Hits, 0 Runs, 0 ER, 2 BBs, and he had 9 SOs.

Acta replaced Bergmann with Luis Ayala to begin the Bottom of the 8th.  Reyes led off by beating out a slow ground ball down the third base line for a single.  Castillo dropped down a bunt towards third, and Zimmerman made the out at first.  Reyes was going to third, but Boone threw the ball to Guzman who tagged Reyes before Reyes got to third.  Wright popped up to first to end the inning.  Ayala gave up 1 Hit, 0 Runs, 0 BBs, and he had 0 SOs in the 8th Inning.

Acta replaced Ayala with Jon Rauch to begin the Bottom of the 9th.  Beltran lined a leadoff single to right.  Church lined out along the left field line, and Harris made a beautiful diving catch to save a hit.  With Delgado at the place, Beltran stole second as Flores’ throw went into center field.  Beltran advanced to third on the poor throw by Flores (Error on Jesus Flores).  Delgado lined out to first, and Beltran got doubled up because he could not get back to third in time.  Rauch gave up 1 Hit, 0 Runs, 0 BBs, and he had 0 SOs in the 9th Inning.

Final Score: Washington Nationals 1 - New York Mets 0.  The MLB.com Box Score is attached.  Mike Pelfrey (2-4) got the loss and Jason Bergmann (1-1) got the win.

Mike Pelfrey pitched a gem today.  Pelfrey got a standing ovation after giving up his first hit in the 7th Inning, and he got another standing ovation after he got pulled after pitching 7.2 Innings allowing 3 hits and 1 run.  Jason Bergmann pretty much matched Pelfrey today, except he gave up 0 runs.  The Mets could not score.  In the Bottom of the 8th, Jose Reyes made a really bad base running mistake.  He attempted to take two bases on a sacrifice bunt rather than one, and it costed the Mets with the opportunity to tie this game up.  When Carlos Delgado hit a rocket to first and Beltran got doubed up in the Bottom of the 9th, that was just bad luck.

Final Score: Washington Nationals 5 - New York Mets 3.  The MLB.com Box Score is attached.  Claudio Vargas (0-1) got the loss and Tim Redding (5-3) got the win.

Surprisingly, this game was a pitching duel early on.  Claudio Vargas pitch a great game in his first game of the year.  Vargas walked a batter, Willie made a pitching change, and Heilman gave up 4 runs (3 earned) in 1/3 of an inning to blow another game for the Mets.  Schneider drove in 2 of the Mets runs today.  Now, the Mets cannot win the series against the last place Nats.  At best, they can tie it tomorrow.  It really is pathetic that the Mets don’t have the killer instinct in them after last year’s collapse.  The Mets need to do something before the season ends and they are still playing .500 ball.

Wednesday’s Mets News: Santana Moved to Face Yankees

May 14, 2008 By: Keith Category: Angel Pagan, Citi Field, Claudio Vargas, Fernando Tatis, Jeff Wilpon, Johan Santana, John Maine, Jorge Sosa, MLB, Matt Wise, NL East, Nelson Figueroa Jr., New York Mets, Ryan Church, Washington Nationals Comments Off

Johan SantanaI’ve read a bunch of articles about everyone thinks that the Mets are doing the right thing by holding back Johan Santana until Friday night against the Yankees.  I strongly disagree with this concept, and I can care less what the Mets do in the interleague games.  The Mets need to win as many interleague games as possible, but not as much as they need to win division games and NL games.  The Mets make sure that their aces face the Yankees every year.  Last season, if they lost one more game against the Yankees and won one more game in their division then they would’ve won the NL East and played in the Playoffs.  The Mets are playing a four-game series against the Nationals right now.  They lost one already so they need to slam the door on the Nats.  So I believe Santana should remain in his normal spot.  Should New York bragging rights cost the Mets the division title?

Final Score: Washington Nationals 3 - New York Mets 6.  The MLB.com Box Score is attached.  John Maine (5-2) got the win and John Lannan (3-4) got the loss.

Well, the Mets settled the score with the Nats.  It’s even at one with two games to go in the series.  Maine pitched another pretty good game.  Good enough to win the game.  The Mets scored 4 runs off of Lannan, and then they were able to add on 2 insurance runs against the Bullpen in the 8th Inning.  Schneider had the most hits in the game (3), and Church had the most RBIs in the game (4).  So the former Nats made a statement against their former team.  Yesterday, Milledge was the hero.  Today, he was the goat.  He went 0-4 with 3 SOs, and a costly Error out in center field.  And most importantly, the win keeps the w-l-w-l-w-l-w-l streak going.  For the ‘08 Mets, it’s all about .500.

The Mets got beat up and battered by another subpar ball club.  W, L, W, L, W, L, W, L, W, L.  What does all of that equal?  .500 baseball, and the Mets are great at it.  Sometimes they go W, W, L, L, W, W, L, L.  In the end, it equals the same thing.  The Nats were all over Figueroa.  After swinging for the fences every at bat, Milledge finally got a big hit against his former team.  He just missed a 3-run shot, and ended up with a 2-run double that bounced off of the left field wall.  The Nats put up a 10 spot on the Mets.  Who da thunk it?  The Mets had control of this game for a few innings, but Perez and the bullpen got out of some jams leaving many Mets on base.  The Mets need to cash’em in $$$$$$$$ the next three games.

Monday’s Mets News: 4 Games With Nats

May 12, 2008 By: Keith Category: AL East, Carlos Beltran, Cincinnati Reds, Luis Castillo, MLB, NL Central, NL East, New York Mets, New York Yankees, Oliver Perez, Scott Schoeneweis, Washington Nationals, Willie Randolph Comments Off

The Metropolitans will host the Nationals to a 4-game series beginning tonight.  Some good pitching and some clutch hitting should lead to a thrashing.  The Mets should be able to sleep walk through the Nats, but they haven’t gotten to that point yet in ‘08.  The Mets keep us on the edges of our seats by playing to the level of the competition.  Here’s the pitching probables for this series:

  • 04/12/2008 - Odalis Perez (0-3) - Nelson Figueroa Jr. (2-2)
  • 04/13/2008 - John Lannan (3-3) - John Maine (4-2)
  • 04/14/2008 - Tim Redding (4-3) - TBD
  • 04/15/2008 - Michael O’Connor (1-1) - Johan Santana (4-2)

Friday’s Mets News: Braves-Mets

April 25, 2008 By: Keith Category: Atlanta Braves, Billy Wagner, Brian Schneider, David Wright, Duaner Sanchez, Gustavo Molina, Joe Smith, MLB, Mike Pelfrey, NL East, New York Mets, SNY, Washington Nationals Comments Off

The good news is that I’m flying down to Charleston, SC for a wedding this weekend.  The bad news is that I won’t be able to cover the Mets-Braves series.  I’m a Rangers fan too so I’m going to miss a Braves-Mets series and Games 1 & 2 of the Rangers-Penguins series.  I set my DVR to record all of that except for Game 1 of the Rangers-Penguins series because it’s on Versus, and I don’t have it.  I’m also going to miss the NFL Draft.  Our output is going to be limited this weekend.  When I get home, I’m going to watch all the Mets-Braves series because I’d never miss it.

Here’s the probable pitching matchups:

  • 04/25/2008 - Jair Jurrjens (2-2) - Mike Pelfrey (2-0)
  • 04/26/2008 - Tim Hudson (3-1) - John Maine (1-2)
  • 04/27/2008 - John Smoltz (3-1) - Nelson Figueroa Jr. (1-1)

I’m not sure about tonight, but the pitching matchups looks like it’s in the Braves favor on Saturday and Sunday.
